The explanations of Hölderlin's poetry date from the years 1936 to 1968. Heidegger writes: "The explanations belong in the conversation of a thinking with a poet whose historical uniqueness can never be proven in literary history, but which can be pointed out through the thinking conversation." This thinking conversation with Hölderlin's poetry began at the beginning of the 1930s with the beginning of Heidegger's thinking about the history of being, on the development of which Hölderlin became a constant companion. The "Explanations" are supplemented by the three major Hölderlin lectures from the winter semester 1934/35 (HGA 39), the winter semester 1941/42 (HGA 52) and the summer semester 1942 (HGA 53), as well as in the comments on Hölderlin in HGA 75 On Hölderlin - Travels to Greece . The edition also contains the marginal notes from Heidegger's personal copies, an appendix and a letter from Heidegger to Detlev Lüders from 1953.
