Excerpt from Entomologist, Vol. 2 Like Rip van Winkle, it awoke after a twenty years' slum. Ber, rubbed its eyes, and stepped forth amongst its living namesakes with all the formality of its pristine appearance. A few months have altered this, and the Entomologist' of '65, although commenced with due solemnity, is as different from the 'entomologist' of '42 as good sound Saxon is from the canine Latin in which I formerly had the misfortune to rejoice. It became obvious that I had mistaken my calling. I had no skill in that very peculiar language which, like the Rev. Edward Irving's, owes its popularity to its obscurity. Excerpt from The Entomologist, 1874, Vol. 7 Against each other (as is also the case in Cynips Ter ricola), forming altogether a brown mass, on the extreme of which the outline of each separate gall is readily to be perceived. When recent this gal] is said to be succulent, but when dry its section exhibits a reddish mass of cells, divided from each other by their septa. Harting states these galls have but one cell, but on investigation I find that the smaller or pea-sized specimens possess from one to three cells, and the larger or cherry-sized galls from three to five, or in some instances as many as nine; these larger cells are ova], measurmg seven millemetres in their longest, by six mille metres in their shortest, diameter, and are enclosed in a pale yellow, softish, thinly-walled capsule, which is throughout firmly united with the substance of the gall. - G. L. Mayr. The existence of Biorhiza aptera, whose gall has been often found on the roots of oak-trees in the south of England, is liable to be shortened by the introduction of the germ of a new life within it, as it is not secure from Callimome Roboris, one of the gorgeous Chalcidiae, or metallic-coloured flies, of which much must be said afterwards - acis Walker. Excerpt from The American Entomologist and Botanist, Vol. 2: An Illustrated Magazine of Popular and Practical Entomology and Botany These bugs, beetles, aphides, heat, rain, and mildew, are the messengers of God. If they are sent - they are on an errand for God! Now, if the above extract has a point, it is that, when mankind plant a crop of any kind of grain or seed, God takes a malicious pleasure in defeat ing such schemes. Excellent! Most admirable logician! But why not attack the Illinois layman as well as the New York clergyman? Just in propor tion, says Dr. Hull, 'as you increase improved fruits and multiply your orchards, just in that proportion will fruit insects and fruit and' fruit tree diseases increase with you. What is that but saying, that when mankind try to grow large quantities of extra fine fruit, Geri takes a malicious pleasure in defeating such schemes? At him, Puritan! Seize him by the throat and worry him to death! The Illinois State Horticulturist is clearly guiltyof the most abom inable veiled profanity. Excerpt from The Naturalist's Library, Vol. 2: Entomology; Beetles John ray was born on the 29th November 1628, at a place named Black Notley, in Essex. Although the name of his family was Ray, he continued all the time he attended the university to write it Wray, a form in which it accordingly appears in the college registers, and in some of his earliest publi cations. This alteration was soon however aban doned, and he confesses himself to have adopted it inconsiderately, and contrary to the usage of his fore fathers. His parents were of humble condition, but they were enabled to provide for the liberal educa tion of their son. His early studies were pursued at the grammar school of Braintree, which was not far distant from the place of his birth. In his maturer years he used to lament that so much of his time had been spent there unprofitably, owing to the imperfect mode of education pursued - a complaint pretty generally applicable to such institutions at the period of which we speak. Excerpt from The Entomologist, Vol. 4 To understand the relations that insects bear to each other and to other objects, and to learn how best to check the ravages of the noxious tribes, we must make ourselves thoroughly acquainted with the natural history of these animals. This subject is particularly important to all persons who are interested in agricultural pursuits. - dr. T. W. Harris, of Harvard Uni. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, Vol. 2 of 27 The small ivory-white larva with a brownish head feeds in the flowers of Erigeron acre; its presence is easily detected when the seeds are ripe by the gathering together of the central florets, the outer seeds subsequently falling off leave only the small tuft which contains the pupa. I have not vet found it in the smaller florets of Erigeron canadense, which occurs in the same localities in Norfolk. The imago appears in the beginning of June, the end of July, and the beginning of August. This species is not known to occur on the continent. In England, it is found at Shoreham (kent) near London; on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk and near Norwich.
