Excerpt from Entomological News, 1933, Vol. 44 A bunsen suction pump was used to draw the air through the Olfactometer. It was connected with the small vertical out let Ou the stern. The air for one Of the intake tubes on the arms of the Y was bubbled through a flask of water, then led through the Odoriferous substance to be tested. The air for the other intake tube was only bubbled through the water. The intake tubes Of the Olfactometer were plugged with cotton, which served both as a filter against droplets or dust of the substance being tested and as a barrier against the occasional earwig which might attempt to ascend the tube. The outlet tube was similarly plugged. Stoppers were put in the ends of the Y when the apparatus was being used. In a preliminary experiment, when no Odoriferous substances were being tested, earwigs had shown a tendency to go into the arm Of the Olfactometer in which air was moving the more rapidly. Therefore, in the experiment proper, every effort was made to equalize the currents of air in the two intake arms. All resistances to the air currents, such as the bends in the tubing and the depth Of water in the flasks, on the two sides were balanced as closely as possible, in setting up the apparatus. Then pinch-cocks were used to help in the equalization. To further approach equality between the two currents, and to ensure a nearly constant rate of flow, the currents were each run through five feet of glass tubing, one millimeter inside diameter. The rate at which air was passing through each side Of the intake systems was judged by the number of bubbles per minute in the flask Of water on each side. A liter of air was drawn through the system in two minutes. In order to eliminate the influence Of bias between the arms on comparative readings between the two intake systems, the latter were changed over from one arm to the other after every two readings. Excerpt from Entomological News, Vol. 25: May, 1914 No doubt every butter y collector who ever papered a lot of desirable material on some extended collecting trip, has experienced more or less disappointment when, on spreading the specimens, those the condition of which; when taken, left nothing to be desired, have been found minus antennae, or legs, the wings rubbed, or the thorax and abdomen attened and distorted. The spreading of any papered specimens, too, is apt to prove more or less unsatisfactory, especially in those families having strong thoracic muscles, as the Hesperiidae, since when specimens have lain in papers though for a short time, the wings often show a tendency to revert to the posi tion held while in the papers, which cannot be entirely over come even though the insects are kept on the spreading boards for a considerable length of time. Also insects that have been once dried and then pinned do not become as firmly fixed on the pin as if pinned when fresh. During the past two summers I have employed a method of caring for my specimens, when on trips varying in length from a few days to two weeks, which proved so very satis factory that I feel it deserves description for the benefit of other collectors. In general terms it consists in pinning the specimens while still pliable, reducing the wings to a horizon tal position (in other words giving the insect a tentative spreading), and then partially relaxing them when they are to be transported homeward or from one place to another on the trip. Simple as the method is, its most effective applica tion requires that it be described in detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Entomological News, 1928, Vol. 39 In only one observed instance have the young spiders selected a building in order to reach a higher altitude. The nest was located near one of the university buildings, and on leaving the nest the spiders took a direct course toward a narrow part of the stone foundation. Between two windows. Arriving here they were apparently disappointed and took a course parallel to the wall of the building. After going a short distance they came to the wall of a projecting part, which must have added to already considerable confusion, so that instead of going to a tree quite near by here, they went up 011 the side of the building to a height of about eighteen feet, whence they sailed. Excerpt from Entomological News, 1943, Vol. 54 This specimen was collected June 6, 1935 along a carriage road of about three-quarters of a mile, between the Breakneck and Witches' Hole Pond. According to Doctor Procter, both of these ponds are for the greater part bogs with quite a lot of Sphagnum, but not what would be called true Sphagnum bogs, and this carriage road between them is a favorite 'hawking' place for dragonflies.
