DOWNLOAD EBOOKAn introduction to the design, production and use of luxury embroideries in medieval England (c. 1200-1530) In medieval Europe, embroidered textiles were indispensable symbols of wealth and power. Owing to their quality, complexity and magnificence, English embroideries enjoyed international demand and can be traced in Continental sources as opus anglicanum (English work). Essays by leading experts explore the embroideries' artistic and social context, while catalogue entries examine individual masterpieces. Medieval embroiderers lived in a tightly knit community in London, and many were women who can be identified by name. Comparisons between their work and contemporary painting challenge modern assumptions about the hierarchy of artistic media. Contributors consider an outstanding range of examples, highlighting their craftsmanship and exploring the world in which they were created.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKEmbroidery has always been a popular art in England, and records show that from Anglo-Saxon times the English were skilled in the craft. The earliest surviving examples are all ecclesiastical. Portions of a magnificent stole and maniple (Plate 1 in this book), dating from about A.D. 915, were found in the tomb of St. Cuthbert in Durham Cathedral, and are now preserved in the Cathedral library. The stole and maniple are embroidered in coloured silks and gold thread, and bear inscriptions stating that they were made for Friedestan, Bishop of Winchester, by order of Queen Aelfflaeda, the wife of Edward the Elder. This is the only English embroidery dating from before the Norman conquest that has been preserved and apart from the Bayeux Tapestry very little work of a date earlier than the middle of the 13th century is now extant. This and many other examples of early English embroidery are displayed in this book. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKNeedlework serves functional purposes, such as providing warmth, but has also communicated individual and social identity, spiritual beliefs, and aesthetic ideals throughout time and geography. Needlework traditions are often associated with rituals and celebrations of life events. Often-overlooked by historians, practicing needlework and creating needlework objects provides insights to the history of everyday life. Needlework techniques traveled with merchants and explorers, creating a legacy of cross-cultural exchange. Some techniques are virtually universal and others are limited to a small geographical area. Settlers brought traditions which were sometimes re-invented as indigenous arts. This volume of approximately 75 entries is a comprehensive resource on techniques and cultural traditions for students, information professionals, and collectors.
