Excerpt from Engineering of Power Plants It is simply an epitome of the subject arranged by the authors for convenient classroom use. Originally compiled by One Of the authors in 1908 for use at the Case School of Applied Science, these notes have been used for eight years at that institution and for four years at the University Of Pennsylvania as the fundamental course in power plants for all senior engineering students, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil and mining engineers. Excerpt from The Mechanical Engineering of Power Plants This book has been undertaken with two distinct objects in view, and according to a principle suggested by these objects. The first and primary intention is to provide a book to serve as a textbook in class-room work in a University which makes the education of engineers a part of its duty. This object has given the book its form and has determined its arrangement. It must have been observed by every instructor that the most enthusiastic class of students who follow engineering in the schools are those who have had a previous experience in the shop or in the power house which has made them familiar with the conditions which there prevail, and has brought to their attention questions for which they have sought to find answers. It is the wish of its projector that. So far as that condition can be met by any book whatever, this book should put all students of engineering somewhat upon the footing of these fortunate persons. It must therefore present the machinery and appliances of the power house before the reader's mind from the practical or experimental side, and make him familiar with the power plant in its various forms, and seek to familiarize him with the solutions which experi ence and good judgment have proposed for problems of this sort. Excerpt from Electric Power Plant Engineering The switchgear in general is the flexible link between the source of supply and the consumer. In designing such a linkage, one must take into consideration the best economy, reliability, adaptability, and efficiency Of the service in the near future, as well as the unknown conditions of the more remote future. Excerpt from Steam Power Plants: Their Design and Construction Frequently engineers and others in charge of a manufacturing business, be it a mill, factory or electric generating station, are called upon to design and purchase a steam power plant or parts of it when their knowledge of the machinery that goes into such a plant is more or less limited, and without being able to obtain the benefit of the advice of a competent consulting engineer. It is hoped that this book will be of special value to this class and of some value to all interested in steam power-plant construction. Part of the text appeared in a series of articles in the engineer ing record, and when the demand for them seemed to warrant their' being published in book form they were thoroughly revised and considerable new matter added. A number of the illustrations have been selected from articles printed in the engineering record during the last two or three years descriptive of steam power-plant construction. They are reprinted without the text that accompanied them, thinking they would be suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Engineering Such a plant has three essential elements: (1) The furnace, (2) the boiler, and (3) the engine. Fuel is fed into the furnace, here it is burned. A portion of the heat liberated from the fuel by combustion is absorbed by the water in the boiler, converting it into steam under pressure. The steam being admitted to the cylinder of the engine does work upon the piston and is then exhausted through a suitable pipe to the atmosphere. The process is a continuous one, fuel and water being fed into the furnace and the boiler in proportion to the power demanded. Excerpt from Power Plants of the Pacific Coast: A Paper Read Before the 220th Meeting, Jan, 15, 1902 To emphasize this I need but call to your minds that for the past twenty years in the history of electrical engineering there has not been a time during which, remarkable work on the Pacific Coast has not attracted attention. In San Francisco was one of the first lighting companies, and one of the very first attempts by a public lighting company to light a large city on a comprehensive plan.
