The merging of different basic and clinical science disciplines towards the common goal of fighting against cancer has long ago called for the establishment of a comprehensive reference source both as a tool to close the language gap between clinical and basic science investigators and as a platform of information for students and informed laymen alike. The Encyclopedia of Cancer provides rapid access to focused information on all topics of cancer research for clinicians, research scientists and advanced students. Given the overwhelming success of the Second Edition, which appeared in 2009, and fast recent development in the different fields of cancer research, it has been decided to publish a third fully revised and expanded edition, following the principal concept of the first edition that has proven so successful. Recent developments are seeing a dynamic progress in basic and clinical cancer science, with translational research increasingly becoming a new paradigm in cancer research. In particular, new approaches to both Personalized Cancer Medicine and Targeted Therapies have made promising progress. While the Second Edition featured scholarly contributions from approximately 1.000 scientists/clinicians in four Volumes, the Third Edition includes 1.300 contributors in 7 Volumes with an A-Z format of approx. 7000 entries. It provides definitions of common acronyms and short definitions of related terms and processes in the form of keyword entries. In addition, there are detailed essays, which provide comprehensive information on syndromes, genes and molecules, and processes and methods. The skin, uniquely positioned at the interface between the human body and the external world, plays a multifaceted role in the expression of cancer. Primary skin cancer is the most common cancer afflicting mankind and is rising in inci dence, despite the fact that it is often preventable. Besides primary cancer, the skin may show direct and indirect evidence of internal cancer, thus serving as a window to the body for both laymen and physicians alike. In addition, the acces sibility of the skin is useful for the study of carcinogenesis as well as cancer treat ment options. lowe much of my interest in skin cancer to Dr. Leon Goldman, the father of dermatologic laser surgery, and to Dr. Edmund Klein, the father of modern immunotherapy. We, at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute, were indeed for tunate to have a wealth of patients available for study. The book begins with the basic science behind the medical applications of the knowledge: cardiovascular biology, pathways, and their relationship to cancer treatment and principles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The second section consists of an overview and classification of anti-cancer drugs and a look at their cardiotoxicity. The third section looks at cardiac imaging in the cancer patient, including cardiac ultrasound, Doppler imaging, nuclear imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography in the cancer patient. In section four, management of cardiac disease in the cancer patient is discussed, including cardiac rhythm disturbances and heart failure. Cardiac emergencies and interventions are described as is preoperative assessment of the cancer patient for non- cardiovascular surgery. The final section includes a range of topics such as the pericardium, cardiovascular effects of endocrine treatments, primary cardiac tumors and malignancies of the myocardium and pericardium. Cardiac monitoring during clinical trials and pulmonary concerns are also addressed, as are psychosocial, social, economic, and legal issues of the cancer patient with heart disease.
