Excerpt from Encyclopaedia of the Laws of England, Vol. 7: Being a New Abridgment by the Most Eminent Legal Authorities The decisions of congresses, the rise of newspapers, the publication of memoirs recording in detail public transactions and events, gradually afforded materials which enabled writers to form more accurate impressions of the rules by which States were really and practically governed in their transactions with each other. The next step in the development of inter national law was, therefore, to collect these materials together. Excerpt from Encyclopaedia of the Laws of England, Vol. 13: Being a New Abridgment by the Most Eminent Legal Authorities More than four years have elapsed since the publication of the Encyclopaedia. During this period there have been considerable additions to the Statute Book, and a large number of important cases have been decided. The Publishers therefore felt that a Supplement, in which recent legislation and Case Law was dealt with and brought up to date, would greatly add to the value and efficiency of the parent work. In the present volume Acts of Parliament up to the end of the last session, and decided cases up to substantially the end of 1902, have been incorporated. Some of the principal cases heard in the beginning of the present year have also been included. The Editor desires to recognise the valuable services rendered in the compilation of the volume by the following Members of the Bar: - C. W. Greenwood, C. C. M. Plumptre, J. Andrew Strahan, James Todd, James Weir, J.Arthur Price, G. G. Phillimore, L. Duckworth, J. B. B. MacMahon, G. H. B. Kenrick, W. Digby Thurnam, H. W. Law, Wyatt Paine, Gilchrist Alexander, W. Llewellyn Williams, R. Cuthbert Brown, and J. Bowen Davies. While the Supplement shows the changes effected by Case Law and legislation, the Index, which has been prepared in response to the urgent request of many subscribers, makes accessible for immediate reference the great mass of information in the work itself, and also in this volume. A reference to the Index will therefore show if, and where, later information has been given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Encyclopaedia of the Laws of England, Vol. 2: Being a New Abridgment by the Most Eminent Legal Authorities This statute recites that divers and sundry persons, craftily obtaining into their hands great substance of other men's goods, do suddenly flee to parts unknown, or keep their houses, not minding to pay or restore to any their creditors their debts and duties, but at their own wills and pleasures consume the substance obtained by credit of other men for their own pleasure and delicate living, against all reason, equity, and good conscience. What the law had its eye upon here was evidently the fraudulent debtor. For redress, the Lord Chancellor, Lord Treasurer, the Chief Justices of either bench, and others of the Privy Council, are by the Act empowered, on complaint, by their wisdoms and discretions to take the offender, his lands, tenements, annuities, and offices, as well as his money, goods, chattels, wares, merchandise, and debts, wheresoever they may be found, and to sell them for satis faction Of the creditors; that is to say, to every of the said creditors a portion, rate and rate alike, according to the quantity of their debts. Here is bankruptcy in embryo. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
