The whole village stopped harvesting, and they rushed to see the baby from nowhere found naked in the middle of the wheat field. The priest said the strange mark below her neck nape was really a letter, a J, probably for Jane. So Jane she was. And as there was no village family who could afford to keep and dower her, it was decided she should be shared. She was passed from cottage to cottage for loving and tending, and then as she grew, to help as she could and to learn every women’s skill to equip her for a maid’s place at the Big House when she was twelve summers old. This was a happy childhood, but the longed-for Big House place was a disaster. On her second day, she was thrown out to go home in a blizzard. She was rescued by an elvish noblewoman and tumbled into adventures in a strange land. Forced to flee from death threats she does not understand, Jane seeks shelter in a great forest, which is the traditional home of the ancient elven folk. Her adventures lead to the setting upon her of an elven task to find someone lost. She is given only a name and told, ‘When you find her, you will know her.’ This is the story of the search. It follows her travels through a cities and countries of a world unknown to her. She encounters ordinary and powerful people, both human and of the elder races. Journeying on, Jane learns more than she ever dreamed possible when she was first plunged into adventure. So the story is one of growing up in unforeseeable circumstances. It is also a story of warm relationships with new friends whose own exciting adventures touch and enliven her own.

The control-flow issues presented in this textbook are extremely relevant in modern computer languages and programming styles. In addition to the basic control-flow mechanisms, virtually all new computer languages provide some form of exceptional control flow to support robust programming introduced in this textbook. Also, concurrency capabilities are appearing with increasing frequency in both new and old programming languages, and are covered in this book. Understanding Control Flow: With Concurrent Programming Using μC++ starts with looping, and works through each of the basic control-flow concepts, examining why each is fundamental and where it is useful. Time is spent on each concept according to its level of difficulty. Examples and exercises are also provided in this textbook. New programming methodologies are requiring new forms of control flow, and new programming languages are supporting these methodologies with new control structures, such as the concurrency constructs discussed in this textbook. Most computers now contain multi-threading and multi-cores, while multiple processors and distributed systems are ubiquitous — all of which require advanced programming methodologies to take full advantage of the available parallelism summarized in this textbook. Advance forms of control flow are becoming basic programming skills needed by all programmers, not just graduate students working in the operating systems or database disciplines. This textbook is designed for advanced-level students studying computer science and engineering. Professionals and researchers working in this field, specifically programming and software engineering, will find this book useful as a reference.

In The Outstretched Shadow, which was named by VOYA as Best Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror book for 2003, Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory introduced readers to The Obsidian Trilogy and a complex new fantasy world populated by humans, centaurs, elves, talking unicorns, and demons. The Golden City of the Bells, where only humans live, is ruled by the Mage Council, practitioners of High Magic---a powerful magic that is stable and reliable, though rigidly controlled and performed only by men. Outside the City's walls, humans and magical beings mix freely and call upon Wild Magic---a system sometimes erratic, always driven by desire and need, and performed by both men and women. Now, in To Light a Candle, the Demon Queen sends her forces against her human and elven enemies, sowing distraction and death. In the human City, the Queen's agents work to divide the Council and foment rebellion among the City's citizens. In the countryside, they target the most vulnerable and valuable---the young Elf Prince and the Wild Mages who might be the Demons' most dangerous enemies. To his own surprise, young Kellen, once the disappointing son of the great Mage who leads the City's Mage Council, has become a powerful Knight-Mage. Valued for his bravery and his skills as both wizard and warrior, Kellen joins the Elves' war councils. Yet he cannot convince the City of his birth that it is in terrible danger. Kellen's sister Idalia, a Wild Mage with great healing ability, has pledged her heart to Jermayan, a proud Elven warrior. Someday Idalia will pay a tragic Price for a world-saving work of Wild Magic, but until then, she will claim any joy life can offer her. Jermayan, who has learned much while fighting at Kellen's side and loving the human Idalia, finds that everything changes when he Bonds with a dragon while rescuing the Elf Prince and becomes the first Elven Mage in a thousand years. Furious at her enemies' success with the dragon, the Demon Queen attacks in force. Light struggles against Dark, like flickering candle flames buried deep in the shadow of Obsidian Mountain. In The Fallen Elves, book three of The Second Neoluzian War epic fantasy series, the wicked Orc dictator Arkan Spiritstrike, his wizards and military generals are on the verge of laying waste to the elven cities of Balenwood and Oakmantle after destroying the human settlements in the northern lands. This is a time of desperation for the good races because Darius has been lost to lower Neoluzia due to the Gathering of Replenishment spell cast upon him by members of the secretive wizard guild, the Veiled Institution. David Parr, a human from Earth summoned by Darius that reluctantly remains in Neoluzia to assist the Salon of Enlightenment against their Orc enemies, must find the great necromancer Termaplix if the land is to be saved. Finding Termaplix may be impossible however, for the hero from the War of Cleansing has been hidden in a secret place due to unknown circumstances one thousand years ago--a tomb long since forgotten to the current generations in the land. Perilously stifled in their shift away from the old magic and the forced elimination of history, those that Parr seeks to help against the enemy from the north must first learn to embrace the gift of magic again, an art banished in antiquity by the deception of peace and the deep wounds of the surviving populations in the first war.
