Excerpt from Electronic Television It was equally obvious that the most reliable source of information would be the two laboratories in which the research had been done. The writer, therefore, wishes to express his profound appreciation to the Radio Corpora tion of America and Farnsworth Television Incorporated, for their splendid cooperation and patience. Both of these companies kindly consented to check over material in the book regarding their respective systems. Without their help, in matters pertaining to each of their respective sys tems, the book could not have been written, and it is doubt ful whether any authentic book on electronic television could be written without their help. Excerpt from Practical Television The present generation has seen the birth and growth of wireless telegraphy from a scientific novelty to a vast industry. From the first experiments of Hertz in 1888 to the present day covers a period of forty years, and during those forty years it can be said that the whole outlook of the man in the street towards science has undergone a fundamental change. We have at the present time a great public interested, and intelligently interested, in scientific subjects, and a new literature has sprung up catering for this body of people. This literature deals almost exclusively with the many branches of wireless and depends for its appeal upon the listener-in. If no other benefit has been conferred upon humanity by the development of radio communication, the introduction of this interest in science to a public which had hitherto been apathetic would in itself be no small benefit. The Shorter Catechism defines man's chief end as the glorification of God, the American Constitution more prosaically defines it as the pursuit of happiness, while in these days we might prefer to describe it as the pursuit of truth. Where better can we seek for truth than in scientific research? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Television Primer of Production and Direction As with all things of magic, television has been surrounded with an aura of mystery and unreality. Strange powers have been attributed to it and strange conceptions of it have be come prevalent. All this is perfectly understandable, but it is a peculiarly unhealthy atmosphere for the growth of a well-grounded, intelligently controlled, socially constructive, and economically sound industry. Only widely disseminated facts and blunt, unromantic, unvarnished truths can correct this situation. Everyone concerned with television, from the transmitter manufacturer to the purchaser of an inexpensive receiver, should know and understand television as it is; not as a glamorized, furbelowed, distorted fantasy, but simply as a medium of electronic circuits, ideas, entertainment, and service. Philo T. Farnsworth (1906-1971) has been called the "forgotten father of television." He grew up in Utah and southern Idaho, and was described as a genius by those who knew and worked with him. With only a high school education, Farnsworth drew his first television schematic for his high school teacher in Rigby, Idaho. Subsequent claims and litigation notwithstanding, he was the first to transmit a television image. Farnsworth filed ten patents between 1927 and 1929 for camera tubes (transmitting), circuitry, and the cathode ray tube (viewing). After his early years as an inventor in San Francisco, he worked as an engineer, doing battle with RCA in the 1930s over patent rights, formed the Farnsworth Television Company in the 1940s, and worked for IT&T after their purchase of the Farnsworth enterprises. Every television set sold utilized at least six of his basic patents. Because of endless legal wrangling with RCA over patent rights, he received very little financial reward for his television patents. Donald Godfrey examines the genius and the failures in the life of Philo Farnsworth as he struggled to be both inventor and entrepreneur.

Excerpt from Fundamentals of Television Television has come around the corner. T's here with such a clatter that it will no doubt remain to become one of our greatest entertainment mediums. In this book there is enlightenment for station owner, performer, engineer, and the miscellaneous curious souls - including the bulk of man kind - whose interest is in listening-viewing television. Just as food cannot be digested without mastication, so ideas cannot be assimilated without having been thought over and understood. The author devoutly hopes that the reader will find herein enough thought-provoking information to give him the urge for further research and thought. Tele vision is a pretty complex affair when one considers it in all facets. So, in these following pages, we have made an effort to be lucid, brief, informative, and interesting. We have tried to avoid technical terms that may be omitted with out damage to the real meanings. We have tried to give enough to make ourselves clear, and, at the same time, not to become boring with detail. Excerpt from Electronic Television Two men stand out as pioneers in electronic television - Philo T. Farnsworth, of Farnsworth Television Incorporated; and Dr. V. K. Zworykin, of the Radio Corporation of America. Practically all of the basic research in this work has been done in the laboratories of these two companies, and it would be impossible to conceive any new development that would not encroach upon the basic research done in one or the other of these laboratories. From time to time both Mr. Farnsworth and Dr. Zworykin, and members of their respective staffs, have contributed articles to proceedings of engineering and other learned societies, especially the Journal of The Franklin Institute. These articles have been scattered and were written primarily for advanced engineers and scientists. With the emergence of electronic television from the laboratory into the field, it was obvious that an authentic book on the subject was needed, a book that not only would be accurate, but also would be written in a manner understandable to readers other than highly trained engineers. It was equally obvious that the most reliable source of information would be the two laboratories in which the research had been done. The writer, therefore, wishes to express his profound appreciation to the Radio Corporation of America and Farnsworth Television Incorporated, for their splendid cooperation and patience. Both of these companies kindly consented to check over material in the book regarding their respective systems. Excerpt from Radio and Television Today, Vol. 7: January, 1941 Events all about us demonstrate that this is increasingly an age of Radio Magic - and that the world is entering upon a Radio Age. So far the coming of the Radio Age has been manifested chiefly in the world of thought - in science, in entertainment, and in communication. Now it is creating electronic devices which promise a similar revolution in the fields of industry. In other words, just as industry has moved from the Steam Age into the Electrical Age, it is now moving into the Radio Age. As we enter 1941 We are under tremendous pressure to increase our production in the national defense. Later, if, as, and when peace comes, we shall have the even more difficult. Excerpt from The Story of Television, the Life of Philo T. Farnsworth This Book is a tribute to the inventive genius of Philo T. Farnsworth, one of the greatest yet least publicized scientists of our generation. It also stands as a tribute to the American way of life, in which ingenuity and progress are encouraged by our system of free enterprise, and to the courage, vision and faith of modern pioneers of American industry such as George Everson and Jesse McCargar. This story of Philo Farnsworth, who through perseverance and unending research rose from an obscure farm boy with an idea to a famed inventor with a discovery that is enriching our living, contains all the elements for a Horatio Alger tale. But the story of Farnsworth is true. Moreover, it didn't take place in the days of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and other great inventors - a period when America was "growing up" and when the vast field of science was first opening to historic discoveries. This story has occurred entirely during the twentieth century; it belongs to our generation. Farnsworth was a teen-aged youth when in 1922 he conceived his scientific ideas for an all-electronic television system - the system that provides the basis for television in use today.
