Excerpt from Electric Railway Journal, Vol. 75: May September, 1931 The present debacle is a far cry from 1910 when Mr. Mitten took over the management of the broken - down street railway system in Philadelphia. No one can deny that in the interim Mitten Management has raised the quality of transportation service to a high level. For its work in building up the property physically, for its accomplishment in maintaining satisfactory relations at all times with its men, for its many campaigns in the interest of safety and for the heed it has given to progressive ideas for service improvement, the manage ment deserves the greatest credit. Its endeavors to promote ere - ordination of facilities have been in line with the most modern thinking. Entry into the field of taxicab operation was a step in this direction. In so far as the law may have blocked the efforts of the company to bring about effective co-ordina tion, the fault lies with the state. In so far as that end may have been sought by devious devices, however, the fault lies with the management. Excerpt from Electric Railway Journal, Vol. 75: September, 1931 This company has adopted the tire mileage contract plan, as have many other bus operators. We feel that this is the most satisfactory way of equipping buses with tires. Damage to tires from accidents, misalign ment, etc., is paid for by the operator. Punctures, glass cuts, etc., are accepted by the tire company as road hazards. When an engine becomes noisy and the consumption of fuel and oil increases noticeably, it is completely dis mantled. The crankcase and other parts are thoroughly cleaned in a solution tank, and, if necessary, new main bearings are installed and line-reamed, the cylinder block and pistons are renewed and the valves refaced. The en gine is then run in for several hours, using ordinary lighting gas as fuel, before it is ready for service. Excerpt from Electric Railway Journal, Vol. 69: January to June, 1927 This is essentially a subject index, not an index of titles, and articles treating a number of different subjects are listed under each of them. In addition, a geographical reference is published wherever the article relates to any particular railway company, city, state or nation. Entries about an electric railway are under the name of the city in which the main office of the company is located, but in the case of electrified sections of steam rail roads, the entries appear under the name of the railroad. In the subject index, the alphabetical method is followed. If there is a choice of two or three keywords the one most generally used has been selected, cross references being supplied. Below is a list of the common key words used in the index to this volume. This list has been subdivided for convenience into fourteen general subjects.
