Quines somos y por qu somos as?

Is reality what we see at first glance when we observe something? This might sound as a senseless question. Obviously, what we see is real. Any object that enters in our field of perception is an objective reality that has weight, density; it is also inert or alive. But are there other levels of reality that are equally valid and real as the level observed at first sight? When we make this question, we realize that it has meaning because science has taught us is that total reality is not the one we perceive at first glance. It suffices to look below its external surface to discover a hidden reality not observable at first glance. One question normally opens the door to other questions. If this is true, one can ask, “Why is it important for me to become aware of those levels of reality if the immediate one is sufficient for my daily performance? How does this question help to clarify why we are designed the way we are?” The latter question immerses us immediately in the field of meaning; the why of things and events. This is another level of personal reality that we must investigate if we want to obtain the full picture of what we claim is real. This is the intention of this essay, to explore the different levels of objective and subjective reality in order to obtain a holistic perspective of ourselves and the world we live in, so that we can accept its diverse levels of reality at the same time that we give it the respect it deserves so that all of us can share and live on Earth, our one country.

Julius was born in a mansion on Salaverry Avenue, directly across from the old San Felipe Hippodrome. Life-size Disney characters and cowboy movie heroes romp across the walls of his nursery. Out in the carriage house, his great-grandfather's ornate, moldering carriage takes him on imaginary adventures. But Julius's father is dead, and his beautiful young mother passes through her children's lives like an ephemeral shooting star. Despite the soft shelter of family and money, hard realities overshadow Julius's expanding world, just as the rugged Andes loom over his home in Lima. This lyrical, richly textured novel, first published in 1970 as Un mundo para Julius, opens new territory in Latin American literature with its focus on the social elite of Peru. In this postmodern novel Bryce Echenique incisively charts the decline of an influential, centuries-old aristocratic family faced with the invasion of foreign capital in the 1950s. Winner of the Outstanding Translation Award of the American Literary Translators Association and the Columbia University Translation Center Award.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger. (Nietzsche) The phenomenon of positive personal change following devastating events has been recognized since ancient times, but given little attention by contemporary psychologists and psychiatrists, who have tended to focus on the negative consequences of stress. In recent years, evidence from diverse fields has converged to suggest the reality and pervasive importance of the processes the editors sum up as posttraumatic growth. This volume offers the first comprehensive overview of these processes. The authors address a variety of traumas--among them bereavement, physical disability, terminal illness, combat, rape, and natural disasters--following which experiences of growth have been reported. How can sufferers from posttraumatic stress disorder best be helped? What does "resilience" in the face of high risk mean? Which personality characteristics facilitate growth? To what extent is personality change possible in adulthood? How can concepts like happiness and self-actualization be operationalized? What role do changing belief systems, schemas, or "assumptive worlds" play in positive adaptation? Is "stress innoculation" possible? How do spiritual beliefs become central for many people struck by trauma, and how are posttraumatic growth and recovery from substance abuse or the crises of serious physical illnesses linked? Such questions have concerned not only the recently defined and expanding group of "traumatologists," but also therapists of all sorts, personality and social psychologists, developmental and cognitive researchers, specialists in health psychology and behavioral medicine, and those who study religion and mental health. Overcoming the challenges of life's worst experiences can catalyze new opportunities for individual and social development. Learning about persons who discover or create the perception of positive change in their lives may shed light on the problems of those who continue to suffer. Posttraumatic Growth will stimulate dialogue among personality and social psychologists and clinicians, and influence the theoretical foundations and clinical agendas of investigators and practitioners alike.
