Excerpt from Principles of Economics, Vol. 2 The length of the period that has elapsed since the appearance of the first volume of the English version seems to call for an apology on the part of the translator, and he tenders the same herewith. In doing so, he may, perhaps, be allowed to mention two extenuating circumstances. One is, that since the year 1903, when what has come to be known as the Fiscal Question was suddenly Sprung upon the country, the amount of time and energy at his disposal, after satisfying the claims of a very busy Department of the Public Service, has been greatly restricted. The other is, that a considerable portion of the translation had to be done a second time owing to the accidental destruction of a bundle of the completed manuscript during the translator's absence abroad. Excerpt from Economics, Vol. 2 In the first place, production may consist of a rc arrangement of particles of matter, resulting in the crea tion of what some economists call form-utilities. This kind of production takes place in the case of agricultural products, where the particles of matter which were useless to man as long as they remained in the soil, become useful to him when they are transformed into plant tissue and are thus rendered available for food. So, too, a form. Utility is created when useless ore is changed into useful metal by smelting. Secondly, production may consist of a transfering of matter from place to place, or what we may call the crea tion of place utilities. An instance of this is found in the transportation from the Niagara Peninsula to Toronto and other cities of surplus fruit which would otherwise rot uselessly upon the ground. _the creation of place-utilities occurs whenever farm produce is increased in value by transportation to_ the cities, or whenever manufactured articles are increased in value by transportation from the city to the farm. All our transportation agencies, railway companies, street car companies, express companies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Economics of Business, Vol. 2 The first volume of the Modern Business Text deals with the individual in his relation to business. "Economics of Business" is concerned with business in its relation to the individual. As here understood, business comprehends all systematic effort which men make to acquire the means of sustaining life and enjoying it. In the modern world this involves a complicated system of voluntary and involuntary cooperation. The underlying rules of these relationships make up economics. In one sense they are the rules of the business game. Success in individual enterprises arises from skilled adjustment of the conduct of the enterprise to these general conditions of business activity. Those who are not informed as to general principles of value, price, rent, interest, wages, profits and all the other specific things that the economist considers, play the business game blindly. Business arises from the fact that men have varying needs, varying gifts and varying possessions. The adjustment of their needs to conditions revolves in large part about their views of the value of different goods. Excerpt from Economics and Jurisprudence, Vol. 2: An Address It is with no thought of subjecting to analysis any abstruse doctrine of political economy, or of discussing any legal question as a lawyer might discuss it, that I invite your attention for the few moments I have the honor to address you, to a consideration of the relation between Economics and Jurisprudence. My purpose, though less comprehensive, is more definite. Convinced as I am that much of the confusion in economic theory and much of the discord in industrial life, are alike due to inadequate expression by formal law of fundamental in dustrial rights, I desire to point out, as well as I may, the Character of that confusion and discord, and to sug gest the line along which evolution in jurisprudence must proceed in order that harmony in economic theory and peace in the business world may be established.
