The book is . They are intellectually rigorous, but written in non-technical language for the thoughtful reader. They deal with the exhaustion of the Western Christian tradition and its need to `cross boundaries` if it is to find renewal; why the North should be interested in development; how to respond to highly divergent views about the effects of the global economy; advice to Christian campaigners and demonstrators; differences and similarities between those who set out to reform the global economy and those who reject it wholesale; ways of doing social theology or social ethics; and some of the challenges made by faith traditions in the `South` to the mainstream development tradition. Many recurring themes in the book arise from the continuing tradition of Christian Realism, requiring us to take full of account of the worst as well as the best in human nature.

Dr. Edell sorts through the morass of research, distinguishing documentable fact from panic-inducing fiction. With trademark humor, grace, and style, he shares with us the essential reassuring facts about our health: you can be fatter than you think; too much exercise might kill you; and yes, sex will add years to your life! Did You Know That... People who crave ice chips may have a nutritional deficiency? Saturated fat may reduce the risk of stroke? Dementia appears to be less common among those who eat more fish? p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

The growing popular perception today is that the Mormon church as just another denomination within Christianity, and representatives of the LDS church often encourage this perspective. Despite points of agreement, major differences exist on foundational theological matters (for example, the Trinity), as well as social and moral issues (such as racial equality). As former Mormons turned evangelical Christians, each of whom is an accomplished scholar, the four contributors to this volume provide a unique and authoritative corrective. Each contributor shares his or her story of growing up in the Mormon church, and how biblical, theological, moral, or scientific issues forced them to eventually leave Mormonism. The contributors draw on the expertise of their respective academic fields to show how Mormon teachings and practice fall short biblically and rationally. They also address common objections raised by former Mormons who have lost faith altogether and have embraced atheism or agnosticism--especially under the influence of "new atheists" like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens.

What if it is death that teaches us how to truly live? Keeping the end in mind shapes how we live our lives in the here and now. Living life backward means taking the one thing in our future that is certain—death—and letting that inform our journey before we get there. Looking to the book of Ecclesiastes for wisdom, Living Life Backward was written to shake up our expectations and priorities for what it means to live "the good life." Considering the reality of death helps us pay attention to our limitations as human beings and receive life as a wondrous gift from God—freeing us to live wisely, generously, and faithfully for God's glory and the good of his world.

Most of us settle. We live average, safe, mediocre lives. But does that kind of living reflect what God has called us to? The abundant life that Jesus promised his followers is nothing less than amazing when we realize that God is working in us so that we may “be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). Jesus did not live an ordinary life, and nor should we! Walk on Water invites believers to rise above the norm. This daily devotional takes a fresh look at the Word of God. Be inspired by the lives of Esther, Daniel, Jonah, and others. Be challenged with Jesus’ no-nonsense conversations with the Pharisees and the disciples. Be emboldened through the honest emotions that pour from the hearts of the writers of the Psalms. In addition to daily devotionals, twelve true stories (experienced by Deb herself) are added at the end of each month to encourage and humor the soul.
