Excerpt from Dublin Explorations and Reflections It was, I feel sure, with all the emotions of the explorer that I took my ticket for Dublin, pleased to be going to such a savage spot with out a revolver and armed only with sympathy and a curiosity which grew to fever pitch as the train hurried northwards and westwards through the sleeping countryside. The train was filled almost entirely with soldiers; there could not have been more than a dozen civilians on board. The men in my compart ment, after going through the soldier's charm ing ritual Of making friends - handing Wood bines to one another, exchanging comics, and so on - soon began the inevitable discus sion about scandals which seems to start whenever soldiers get together. They all gave their opinions as to what Should be done when the war was over. TO judge from their tone, the flight Of the entire Cabinet to America on the Day of Reckoning would (from the Cabinet's point Of view) be an advisable course If you ask me, 'said the sergeant. Excerpt from The Dublin Review, Vol. 15 The question of Proportionate Representation - although, owing to an accidental combination of circumstances, it may seem for the moment to be disposed of - is one certain to recur, and perhaps more than once, for discussion, because it involves a deep principle, and a principle carries with it a strong vitality. It concerns the philosophy of politics, while by the superficial it is frequently treated as if it were but an arithmetical conundrum. Those who thus regard it have turned out the wrong side of the tapestry for inspection; the pattern is lost to them, and it is no wonder if they amuse themselves by plucking at the stuck-out ends of threads. In dealing with a serious matter of ethics we cannot make a beginning unless we separate the accidental from the essential, and contemplate the problem in the light of that idea which illustrates it. Let us thus contemplate "Proportionate Representation" in its connection with two things of which the modern world makes boast, without, however, at all times appreciating their higher claims on our respect - viz., "the Nation," and "National Progress." Coleridge once exclaimed, "Oh for a statesman - a single one - who truly understands the living might inherent in a principle!" Excerpt from The Story of Dublin The topography of Dublin is easy to understand. The river, running east and west, bisects the city. There are two lines of main thoroughfare, Grafton, Westmoreland and Sackville Streets going north and south, Thomas, High, Lord Edward and Dame Streets, going east and west. These intersect at College Green, which is, to all intents and purposes, the centre of the town, and has been taken as the starting-point of most of the excursions in Part II. Excerpt from Tour in Ireland: With Meditations and Reflections Conspirators populace, - without seeing a broken head, or hearing an angry expression! With ample food and field for thought, in every direc tion - and with little inclination, and less talent, for scenic delineation, itinerary details, or collection of anec dotes, I have, as on former occasions, and other tours, confined myself almost exclusively, to observations and meditations on the more striking objects that presented themselves to my senses, or to my mind's eye. Some people say scohn, while others say schown. He says bath, while she says bahth. You say potayto. I say potahto And- -wait a second, no one says potahto. No one's ever said potahto. Have they? From reconstructing Shakespeare's accent to the rise and fall of Received Pronunciation, actor Ben Crystal and his linguist father David travel the world in search of the stories of spoken English. Everyone has an accent, though many of us think we don't. We all have our likes and dislikes about the way other people speak, and everyone has something to say about 'correct' pronunciation. But how did all these accents come about, and why do people feel so strongly about them? Are regional accents dying out as English becomes a global language? And most importantly of all: what went wrong in Birmingham? Witty, authoritative and jam-packed full of fascinating facts, You Say Potato is a celebration of the myriad ways in which the English language is spoken - and how our accents, in so many ways, speak louder than words.
