Excerpt from Dombey and Son If any of them have felt a sorrow in one of the principal incidents on which this fiction turns, I hope it may be a sorrow of that sort which endears the sharers in it, one to another. This is not unselfish in me. I may claim to have felt it, at least as much on anybody else; and I would fain be remembered kindly for my part in the experience. Everything's a going wrong. Even the chronometer's five-sixths of a second for'ard of the Sun, a thing that's never happened afore, since I've been in the business. Poor Walter! he ought to come and see me. What a stupid old crawfish I am! haven't I chained him to his desk like a galley slave? No wonder I don't sell anything - the people must see old savage uncle, in every wrinkle of my pitiless old phiz! Waller. [Without, D. F.] Hallo! Wooden Middy, ahoy! what cheer uncle Sol? Sol. There he is, with a voice as merry as though I had made him a skipper, instead of a galley slave! Enter Walter, D. F. Comes down, L. H. Walter. My dear uncle! bless your old soul, how are you? What's the matter? a little down in the mouth, eh? can't get on well without me? I thought not! Sol. Walter, my boy, - come now, it won't do' you think me a brute, I know it! that's not real joy that's in your eye. Confess it, I've sold you into slavery, haven't I? and I ought to be kicked for it! Walter. Slavery! not a bit of it! I never was half so happy in my life; I have an excellent opportunity to establish myself in the world, and am no longer a burthen upon you, my kind old benefactor! Sol. Don't, Wally, don't! you only make me feel more keenly the enormity of my crime! I suppose it's all for the best. Believe me, my darling boy, I couldn't help it, - and I do think, when you come to consider of it, that you'll forgive me! Excerpt from Works of Charles Dickens, Vol. 2: Dombey and Son Paul had never risen from his little bed. He lay there, listening to the noises in the street, quite tran quilly; not caring much how the time went, but watch ing it and watching everything about him with observing eyes. Excerpt from Dombey and Son, Vol. 1 I make so bold as to believe that the faculty (or the habit) of closely and carefully observing the characters of men is a rare one. I have not even found, within my experience, that the faculty (or the habit) of closely and carefully observing so much as the faces of men is a general one by any means. The two commonest mistakes in judgment that I suppose to arise from the former default are, the confounding of shyness with arrogance, and the not understanding that an obstinate nature exists in a perpetual struggle with itself. Excerpt from Paul Dombey: From Dombey and Son American Notes and Martin Chuzzlewit. His sarcasm and the severity with which in these two books he caricatured the people he met excited indignation among Americans. This feeling gradually passed away, however, and in 1868, upon his second visit, he was cordially received in all the larger cities of the United States. He read selections from his own works, and crowds came to hear him. In England he was universally popular. The queen offered him a title of nobility, but he declined it, saying that he wished to be remembered by no other name than Charles Dickens. He continued to write until the very day of his death, and left unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which promised to be one of his best novels. He died suddenly on the 8th of June, 1870 and the nation paid him homage by burying him in the Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. Excerpt from Dombey and Son, Vol. 3 Dawn, with its passionless blank face, steals shiver ing to the church beneath which lies the dust of little Paul and his mother, and looks in at the windows. It is cold and dark. Night crouches yet, upon the pave ment, and broods, sombre and heavy, in nooks and cor ners of the building. The steeple-clock, perched up above the houses, emerging from beneath another of the countless ripples in the tide of time that regularly roll and break on the eternal shore, is grayly visible, like a stone beacon, recording how the sea flows on but within doors, dawn, at first, can only peep at night, and see that it is there.
