Annotation. David Rock has written the first comprehensive study of nationalism in Argentina, a fundamentalist movement pledged to violence and a dictatorship that came to a head with the notorious "disappearances" of the 1970s. This radical, right wing movement has had a profound impact on twentieth-century Argentina, leaving its mark on almost all aspects of Argentine life--art and literature, journalism, education, the church, and of course, politics.
La creacin de toda estructura organizacional exitosa pasa inicialmente por el anlisis de los motivadores del comportamiento del hombre, para luego modelarlo e integrarlo conceptualmente a las organizaciones. El ser humano no puede ser modelado como un ente exclusivamente racional, sino como un ser con capacidad de razonar, sentir, intuir e integrarse a su realidad organizacional y social. La realidad puede ser entendida de acuerdo al paradigma que se est utilizando. El paradigma mecanicista modela las estructuras organizacionales como mquinas, mientras que el paradigma orgnico puede modelar las organizaciones como seres vivos. Las organizaciones, las instituciones y la sociedad pueden ser modelados como estructuras orgnicas en la medida en que el ser humano aumente su nivel de consciencia de pertenecer a un orden maravilloso basado en la Ley del Amor. Toda estructura organizacional y social tiene un grado de organicidad de acuerdo al nivel de cooperacin que haya entre sus integrantes. Mientras mayor su capacidad de cooperar, mayor ser su grado de organicidad. El paradigma orgnico puede contribuir a modelar conceptualmente la Sociedad, el sistema econmico y el Estado. El proceso de transicin de la Sociedad Moderna a la Sociedad Orgnica puede darse a travs de cambios minimalistas intercalados con acciones radicales puntuales que permitan alcanzar el resultado esperado. Si este tipo de proceso no es implementado, pueden surgir crisis en el sistema que degeneren en situaciones de caos.
Recientemente, muchos observadores de políticas y prácticas de cohesión social han discutido que la globalización ha promovido la convergencia global hacia modelos neo-liberales en este campo. Similarmente, estudiosos y practicionarios de la política regional han contenido que las políticas sociales de Europa representan las "mejores prácticas" a nivel global y por ello han sido promovidas en otras regiones del mundo (por ejemplo en las recientes cumbres UE-Latinoamérica sobre cohesión social), lo que lleva también a la convergencia en la elaboración de la política. Este libro cuestiona estas afirmaciones y se pregunta si distintos enfoques regionales a la cohesión social son todavía pertinentes. El análisis trans-regional comparativo presentado en este volumen está basado en el examen de la competencia entre actores (poder), el papel de la historia y tradiciones sociales (tiempo) y la importancia de límites geográficos a la cohesión social (espacio).
Recent realizations that prehispanic cities in Mesoamerica were fundamentally different from western cities of the same period have led to increasing examination of the neighborhood as an intermediate unit at the heart of prehispanic urbanization. This book addresses the subject of neighborhoods in archaeology as analytical units between households and whole settlements. The contributions gathered here provide fieldwork data to document the existence of sociopolitically distinct neighborhoods within ancient Mesoamerican settlements, building upon recent advances in multi-scale archaeological studies of these communities. Chapters illustrate the cultural variation across Mesoamerica, including data and interpretations on several different cities with a thematic focus on regional contrasts. This topic is relatively new and complex, and this book is a strong contribution for three interwoven reasons. First, the long history of research on the “Teotihuacan barrios” is scrutinized and withstands the test of new evidence and comparison with other Mesoamerican cities. Second, Maya studies of dense settlement patterns are now mature enough to provide substantial case studies. Third, theoretical investigation of ancient urbanization all over the world is now more complex and open than it was before, giving relevance to Mesoamerican perspectives on ancient and modern societies in time and space. This volume will be of interest not only to scholars and student specialists of the Mesoamerican past but also to social scientists and urbanists looking to contrast ancient cultures worldwide.
While leftist governments have been elected across Latin America, this ‘Pink Tide’ has so far failed to reach Peru. Instead, the corporate elite remains firmly entrenched, and the left continues to be marginalised. Peru therefore represents a particularly stark example of ‘state capture’, in which an extreme concentration of wealth in the hands of a few corporations and pro-market technocrats has resulted in a monopoly on political power. Post the 2016 elections, John Crabtree and Francisco Durand look at the ways in which these elites have been able to consolidate their position at the expense of genuine democracy, with a particular focus on the role of mining and other extractive industries, where extensive privatization and deregulation has contributed to extreme disparities in wealth and power. In the process, Crabtree and Durand provide a unique case study of state development, by revealing the mechanisms used by elites to dominate political discussion and marginalize their opponents, as well as the role played by external actors such as international financial institutions and foreign investors. The significance of Crabtree’s findings therefore extends far beyond Peru, and illuminates the wider issue of why mineral-rich countries so often struggle to attain meaningful democracy.
