Prayer can be wonderfully accessible to everyone. "In learning to pray, no laboratory is needed but a room, no apparatus but ourselves," Douglas Steere writes. Aware of how easily we can be intimidated by complex methods, Steere suggests that we begin by simply acknowledging our dependence on God. Prayer comes as a response to a God who "besieges us with love," he says. In Dimensions of Prayer, Steere answers common questions and concerns about prayer. Among the topics covered are petition, confession, adoration, intercessory prayer, and how to cope with dry times in prayer. This easy-to-read book offers new "pray-ers" an engaging introduction to prayer while providing valuable wisdom for mature Christians.

"Conscience and Prayer takes the new conversation between Christian spirituality and moral theology to a deeper level of precision and focus. The authors argue that the relationship between moral theology and spirituality can best be explored by looking at how conscience is related to prayer. In exploring this relationship, both historically and theologically, Billy and Keating open new ways to approach the fundamental aspects of Catholic moral theology."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Months before September 11, 2001, many Greater New York churches were uniting together in one of the largest urban prayer movements in the world. So when disaster struck on that late summer Tuesday morning, the churches and people were already in place to comfort, heal and pray for miracles.Mac Pier and Katie Sweeting, coordinators for Concerts of Prayer Greater New York, write about their experiences in The Power of a City at Prayer. They explain how to build an urban prayer ministry, and they share powerful examples of how such prayer movements have dramatically influenced neighborhoods, communities and cities around the world--including New York City before and after September 11, 2001.

This study renders an original and constructive Catholic theology of prayer drawing on the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988). Travis LaCouter explores the trinitarian, Christological, ecclesial, anthropological, and eschatological dimensions of prayer in Balthasar's theology, and shows how these combine to give a powerful account of prayer's proper theological scope and purpose. There is also a critical dimension of prayer which is arguably underdeveloped in some of Balthasar's key texts, but which LaCouter shows to have significant dialogical potential with contemporary accounts of parrhesia since Foucault. This approach demonstrates the centrality of prayer to Balthasar's entire theological system and does so in a way which itself constitutes an exercise in Catholic systematics. This study is also distinctive for establishing a method of proceeding through Balthasar's sprawling oeuvre (and the similarly vast secondary literature) by arguing for three “categories” of texts in Balthasar's writings and, separately, three “waves” of Balthasar readers. Thus, this study is a resource not just for those interested in prayer but for anyone interested in reading Balthasar today.
