Fish Physiology, Volume 40B recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The editors of the series have produced a total of 47 books (several volumes have two books) that contain almost 500 chapters since the inaugural volume published in 1969. Initial volumes were devoted to understanding the basic mechanisms and principles of fish physiology, with a focus on a few model species and some application to natural environmental conditions. Then, as the field better understood mechanisms, the approach was broadened to not only delve deeper into system physiology (e.g., chapters in early volumes were expanded to become books), but also interspecific differences in physiology.Finally, as interspecific physiological mechanisms were further resolved, it became possible to discuss physiology in light of a changing world. Thus, physiology can now inform on conservation, sustainability and management, as exemplified with the most recent volumes. The results of analyses designed to develop model fishery compartments and associated fish population rate coefficients on a regional basis for use in reservoir ecosystem modeling are presented. Emphasis is directed toward development of regional rate coefficients for the United States corresponding to major geographical drainage areas. Fishery data will be incorporated in the reservoir ecosystem model currently being developed by personnel of the Environmental Effects Laboratory, U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. Known physical, chemical, and fishery conditions in 187 Corps of Engineers (CE) impoundments larger than 500 acres are described. Multivariable equations are presented that allow estimation of standing crop and sport fish harvest in CE reservoirs. Data were also reviewed and summarized on the ecological growth and assimilation efficiencies of fish, food consumption rates, respiration rates, temperature tolerances, half-saturation constants for growth, and chemical composition.

Aquaculture has become one of the main sources of human food, and the per capita food fish supply has reached 21 kilograms in 2019. With the expansion of the farming industry and the deterioration of the farming environment, outbreaks of various infectious diseases have become more and more serious, resulting in huge economic losses. In the past, antibiotics were commonly used to control diseases in aquaculture animals. However, the overuse of antibiotics caused various problems such as pathogen resistance, drug residues and environmental pollution.
