Este glosario es una reedición ampliada y corregida de un opúsculo anterior titulado Guía Básica de Fonética y Fonología (Pamies & Káloustova, 2002), un material didáctico y divulgativo, originalmente con cinco lenguas, concebido para estudiantes de filología y de traducción con el fin de ayudar a los estudiantes y profesores no especialistas, partiendo de cero e intentando no entrar en polémicas entre especialistas. La presente reedición revisada aumenta el número de lenguas a siete: español -lengua de entrada junto con una definición del término en esta lengua-, y las equivalencias en inglés, francés, ucraniano, ruso, checo y alemán. Para ello se han incorporado nuevos autores al equipo de trabajo y se han añadido nuevas entradas. Términos anatómicos muy comunes como boca, glotis, nariz, campanilla, etc. también se han incluido, porque su definición adopta la perspectiva del fonetista, describiéndolos en función de su protagonismo en la producción de sonidos. En algunos casos un mismo término puede aparecer como entrada solo y como miembro de una locución, porque en alguna de las lenguas ello puede afectar a la equivalencia al no existir en ella necesariamente una locución analítica.
