La obra inicia su génesis en el Diccionario Politécnico de Ferrocarriles Alemán-Español editado en 1993, con 25.000 entradas, y en el Diccionario de Términos Ferroviarios. Se ha procurado aprovechar la riqueza lingüística de este país (España) traduciendo las entradas al catalán, al euskera y al gallego, y además, por la proyección internacional de la temática, se ha incluido la traducción al alemán, el francés y el inglés, principales idiomas extranjeros que generan documentación técnica relacionada con el ferrocarril.
