Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses brings together globally-recognized mycoses experts to guide readers in the use of current knowledge in the field of medical mycology to manage those who suffer from fungal infections (mycoses). Often, diagnostic strategies and tests, including basic and directed culturing techniques, histopathology with standard and special stains, serological methods, and radiological studies all need to be considered and commonly combined to make the diagnosis of fungal infection. This volume first introduces and reviews these tools separately and then as they pertain to specific infections or groups of diseases. The volume consists of four parts. Parts I-III provide an overview of diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and part IV presents the human mycoses. Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Mycoses is meant to be a concise text that will provide the busy infectious disease, hematology–oncology, pulmonology, or critical care specialist a practical tool to diagnose and manage fungal infections. In addition, the depth of the material in the text will provide these and other medical specialists and trainees an excellent reference and learning resource.

The book is an extensive overview in the topic of superficial mycoses. The book deliberates on human fungi kingdom, pathogenesis of different superficial mycological diseases, its classical clinical manifestations and the variants clinical forms, with an emphasis on the relevant differential diagnosis, which sometimes might be confused with superficial mycoses. The book is written in a very practical approach accompanied with images and relevant explanations. The book has two main goals. First, to provide broad information regarding superficial dermatomycological diseases. In addition, it gives emphasis on correct diagnosis, focusing on precise and relevant interpretation of mycological laboratory analysis in order to prevent over-diagnosis and misinterpretation of the disease. The clinical approach -- practically -- is necessary for having correct diagnosis. The final diagnosis will be supported by using the standard laboratory analysis. A unique chapter elaborates widely on laboratory analysis, combined with relevant interpretation of the mycological results. This is due to many different saprophytes fungi which are irrelevant to skin diseases and might be interpreted as relevant, by mistake. Other laboratories techniques are discussed widely as well. The different approaches for mycological analysis are elaborated including the interpretation of false positive and false negative results. Other skin disorders such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and/or many other nails disorders which could be accompanied with relevant or irrelevant different fungi are discussed widely accompanied with very impressive clinical pictures and explanations of how and when to suspect combined disorders. Topical and systemic anti fungi treatment is listed clearly, focusing on the different antifungal mechanisms of each antifungal family. Drug interactions/contra-indications between the antifungal drug/s and other common drugs are presented in detail as well as the possible side effects of the antifungal drugs. New different drugs and devices such as lasers, photo dynamic therapy (PDT), and drilling of the nails also are examined.

This new edition has been fully revised to provide microbiologists with the latest information on fungal infections, covering the entire spectrum of different types of infection, and therapeutic modalities. Beginning with a general overview explaining morphology, taxonomy, and diagnosis, the following sections cover the different categories of fungal infection including superficial cutaneous mycoses, subcutaneous mycoses, systemic mycoses and opportunistic mycoses. A complete section is dedicated to pseudofungal infections. The highly illustrated text concludes with a detailed appendices section and each chapter features key references for further reading. Fungal growths affect both human and animal well-being. Many natural pathogens of laboratory animals alter host physiology, rendering the host unsuitable for experimental uses. While the number and prevalence of few pathogens have declined considerably, many still turn up in laboratory animals and represent unwanted variables in research. Investigators using laboratory animals in biomedical experimentation should be aware of the profound effects that many of these agents can have on research. What does the future hold regarding the natural pathogens of laboratory animals? The selection of an animal model must carefully address issues of the type of human disease to mimic, the parameters to follow, and the collection of the appropriate data to answer those questions being asked. Overall, animal models of fungal infection will continue to deepen our understanding of how these infections occur. This book provides a valuable source of information to biological and biomedical scientists and to clinical and doctoral researchers working in the area of fungal infections and diseases of laboratory animal species.
