Excerpt from Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 5: The Practitioner's Monthly; May, 1905 I will not attempt to describe the country through which the Canal runs, or its location; these are sufficiently well-known from the public discussion of the matter in the daily papers, journals and magazines. It is sufficient to say that it runs through a rolling and well-watered country, with not more marsh than would occur in a similar country in the United States. Physically there is nothing very unusual or very difficult as to its sanitation. At the time of the commencement of the work by the Sanitary Department, in June, 1904, the country controlled by that department had a population of about in Panama, along the Canal between Panama and Colon, and about in Colon. The main object of sanitation was to free this territory from yellow fever, and as much as possible from malaria; and when free, to prevent a re introduction from the outside, of these diseases. Excerpt from Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 4: January, 1905 Unless necessity demands, the general practitioner should not attempt special surgery; he cannot get the best results; the best interests of the patient will not be conserved and as a result the reputa tion of the physician will suffer, the inter ests of both being identical. He should, however, endeavor to make an accurate diagnosis and will be expected by the friends to give a prognosis. For this reason he should make effort to know the character of the work done by different specialists. Not all of those who claim special aptitude possess it. Observation will show that some who talk aseptic principles do not observe them. Specialists will also show different grades of workmanship. It is a question of high art, the products of every one will differ in actual value from those of every other one, and in relation to so sacred an object as the conservation of life and the restoration of health it behooves the medical adviser to know He assumes a great responsibility in recommending an operator and should be paid for this knowledge by the patient, who reaps the benefit. In making the selection he should be guided by the answer to the question: To whom would you refer your wife or mother or sister under similar condi tions.
