An enthralling tale of discovery and adventure littered with a sense of daring and romance, the intrigue of the stock market mixed with the brutal harshness of the Australian outback and the dangers of the African jungle. En route from Melbourne to Singapore, the Jumbo Jet makes a forced landing in the remote far north west of Australia. This leads to the discovery of an extremely rich vein of Blue Diamonds that Jack Murray develops into a small but successful mining company with the assistance of a well known diamond producer. Listing on the Australian Stock Exchange sees the company’s fortunes rapidly grow and provide a rich return to investors. Receiving an offer too good to refuse, Jack sells out to a South African venture organization that has disastrous results in its attempts to increase production. With persuasion from disgruntled investors, Jack buys back the company at a rock bottom price that includes a lease to a diamond mine in the turbulent African country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With his partner, Jack relocates to the eastern regions of the troubled DRC and re-opens the mine with the help of untrained but enthusiastic local workers. Conflict soon erupts with rebel leaders from neighbouring Rwanda that threatens the lives of all involved

This well written anecdotal account of the early days of diamond production in Namibia focuses on the settler pioneer August Stauch, who has also become a legend among the settler community today. The author gives a vivid description of the major diamond discoveries and the rush for claims in 1908, followed by the struggle for control and monopoly which eventually led to the takeover by De Beers. It also deals with the political career of August Stauch as a member of the old "Landesrat" and of the Legislative Assembly established in 1926, and describes the fall of his business empire in Germany and Namibia in the interwar period. The biography glorifies a time which, in the overall history of diamond mining in Namibia, is relatively unimportant, and tends to reinforce dearly held colonial myths ("the men who made South West"). It is lavishly illustrated with photos, drawings and facsimile prints of documents. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

What would tempt a young woman to run off to a country she knew almost nothing about? I was that young woman. Fleeing a bitter divorce and my safe, but mundane, life I accepted a job in Saudi Arabia, a country that by all reports was the most austere on earth. I ran headlong into an unexpected adventure that would change my life forever. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - mysterious, beautiful and dangerous. A land of stunning desert landscapes where modern ways co-exist uneasily with ancient traditions. An enigma of a place where the state executioner is revered, where beautiful women shroud themselves in black, and ferocious desert sandstorms turn high noon into darkest night. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with the Middle East and its people, their proud history, and their gracious hospitality. This is my story.

Diamonds have long been bloody. A new history shows how Germany’s ruthless African empire brought diamond rings to retail display cases in America—at the cost of African lives. Since the late 1990s, activists have campaigned to remove “conflict diamonds” from jewelry shops and department stores. But if the problem of conflict diamonds—gems extracted from war zones—has only recently generated attention, it is not a new one. Nor are conflict diamonds an exception in an otherwise honest industry. The modern diamond business, Steven Press shows, owes its origins to imperial wars and has never escaped its legacy of exploitation. In Blood and Diamonds, Press traces the interaction of the mass-market diamond and German colonial domination in Africa. Starting in the 1880s, Germans hunted for diamonds in Southwest Africa. In the decades that followed, Germans waged brutal wars to control the territory, culminating in the genocide of the Herero and Nama peoples and the unearthing of vast mineral riches. Press follows the trail of the diamonds from the sands of the Namib Desert to government ministries and corporate boardrooms in Berlin and London and on to the retail counters of New York and Chicago. As Africans working in terrifying conditions extracted unprecedented supplies of diamonds, European cartels maintained the illusion that the stones were scarce, propelling the nascent US market for diamond engagement rings. Convinced by advertisers that diamonds were both valuable and romantically significant, American purchasers unwittingly funded German imperial ambitions into the era of the world wars. Amid today’s global frenzy of mass consumption, Press’s history offers an unsettling reminder that cheap luxury often depends on an alliance between corporate power and state violence.
