This three-volume set CCIS 1755-1757 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Applied Technologies, ICAT 2022, held in Quito, Ecuador, in November 2022. The 112 full papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 415 submissions. This volume presents papers from the 4th International Conference on Water & Society. The focus of the conference was to encourage trans-disciplinary communication on issues related to the nature of water, and its use and exploitation by society. The availability of clean and inexpensive water can no longer be taken for granted as the need for water continues to increase due a growing global population. Sustainability is a new, important discourse aimed at promoting a new strategy in the development of energy, water and environmental (EWE) systems — the key components that affect the quality of life on our planet. It is becoming increasingly clear that the quest for sustainable development requires integrating economic, social, cultural, political and ecological factors. The behavior and properties of an EWE system arise not merely from the properties of its component elements, but also to a large degree also from the nature and intensity of their dynamic interlinkages. This volume helps clarify the complexity of these problems by providing a deeper understanding of the implications of the different aspects of sustainability.This work contains a collection of selected, peer-reviewed and state-of-the-art reflecting papers that were presented at the Third Dubrovnik Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems that was held in June 5-10, 2005 in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Between 2007 and mid-2011, the Tragsa Group has financed the project of R&D DINA-MAR, "Management of Aquifer Recharge within the framework of sustainable development". The project has been centered on studies related to aquifer management from different perspectives and on its potential for consolidation as an effective water management technique. In October 2010 the Group published a book compiling the major contributions of the research team, entitled: "DINA-MAR," "Management of aquifer artificial recharge in the context of sustainable development: Technological stage", with 496 pages written in Spanish. The book collected visions and results of technicians from more than eight different disciplines. However, some aspects were not included, such as those contributions and conclusions reached in the periodic coordination meetings, formal and informal, and from both Workshops and open debates held in the course of the project. In order to unify emanating contributions from different actors over four years’ time, the final synthesis book was written with the aim of providing additional and complementary information to the above-mentioned publication. It was translated in English to make it accessible to a larger scientific community. The text has four sections: 1) a summary of the Workshop held on June 30, 2008, 2) a summary and conclusions of the final publication, 3) a summary of the closing workshop held 25 May 2011 and 4) general project conclusions. As it is a continuous learning process, the publication lacks the usual conclusions section, provided that it occupies the entire book, as well as the bibliography, which provide only two reviews, having a broad development in the book which complements. We hope that this is of interest and accomplishes the Mission for which has been carried out, dissemination, technology transfer and a study of pros and cons of a water management technique that is becoming more common. -Demonstration sites as it is the case of the hydrogeological routes “Caminitos de Agua” (little paths of water), implemented during the development of the project, represent an important line of action in terms of dissemination and environmental education. This example, currently being applied in Spain, should be implemented in other places of interest.
Always considered a classic renewable resource, after a hundred thousand years of farming and industry, rivers in many parts of the world are running dry and the groundwater is over pumped. In addition, the rate at which water sources are becoming contaminated with waste from humans, industry, and agriculture is truly alarming. Do these factors add up to a water crisis that merits drastic, large-scale action? Not necessarily say the editors of Water Crisis: Myth or Reality. They challenge this pessimism, concluding that while there are serious global water issues to be considered, the concept of a global water crisis is largely overstated. The book examines the issues and explores which conditions are permanent and unchangeable and which are remediable and changeable. The chapters explore when and where severe regional and local water problems occur and make suggestions about how they may be solved in a deliberate, non-crisis manner. The book covers recent breakthroughs in desalination technologies, the eco-sanitation revolution, international trade in agricultural products, methods of governance and negotiation in water allocation, and pricing and devolution of property rights and the roles they play in solving water issues. The editors, along with a panel of world-renowned experts, suggest that water issues can be solved over the next few decades using new technologies and processes.
