This document provides in-depth information for on the progress toward the National Education Goals at the national level. The report is divided in sections pertaining to Goals 1-8. Each section discusses the Goal, identifies objectives, and presents a series of exhibits representing indicators for the national volume. Changes in progress are noted for the charts and sidebars highlight important information. The nation has made encouraging progress in mathematics achievement; prenatal care; and participation in Advanced Placement examinations in core areas such as English, mathematics, science, and history. Other areas, however, call for improvement. Data show that the United States has fallen behind in achieving the goals of adult literacy and lifelong learning and safe, disciplined, and alcohol- and drug-free schools. One essential step is for schools and families to form strong partnerships to improve education. The National Education Goals Panel's plans for supporting state and community development of academic standards and assessments are highlighted. Eighty-nine figures and a 1995 National Education Goals Report Questionnaire are included.
