Danny and Kay accept a job for the summer, flying supplies for a mining company in the remote Canadian wilderness. There, they meet Hal and Doug, two boys headed for trouble but excited about the prospect of flying with Danny. However, Hal’s father, an abusive alcoholic, forbids Hal from flying. Hal devises a dishonest way to get that plane ride, a decision that ends up changing his life.
Little Joe Nighttraveler is a new Christian who has a broken leg. Danny is flying Little Joe and his brother, Howard, to the hospital in Finland House. On the way, they encounter a bad snowstorm which causes them to crash. In the crash, Danny is seriously injured, leaving Howard, who is not a Christian, as the only able-bodied person to take care of things.
Kay and Danny are faithfully serving God as missionaries in Guatemala. While Danny is out clearing ground for an airplane landing strip, Kay is asked to make an urgent medical visit upriver in the jungle. On the way back to the mission station, Kay shows signs of heatstroke, and Danny and Kay must return to Minnesota for Kay's recovery. While in Minnesota, Kay receives bad news from the doctor that doesn’t make sense. Even though she feels fine, she's told that she shouldn’t return to Guatemala. Why would God allow this to happen when they are so needed in Guatemala?

Meanwhile, due to an emphasis on evolution in his biology class, Bob begins to question the Bible. Danny and his cousins learn to trust in the Lord, even when asked hard questions.
Danny and Kay Orlis fly down to Central America to test out a new mission plane. While in Guatemala, they stay with Mr. and Mrs. Davis and their three children, who are ministering to the Indians in the remote jungle areas of the country. The Davis triplets, full of life and mischief, are a joy and blessing to their parents, but while Danny and Kay are there helping out, tragedy strikes, and the three kids are left with more questions than answers.
