DOWNLOAD EBOOKWritten by an economist who is spezialized in growth theory and also an expert on European Integration, the book looks at economic growth of EU regions from a theoretical as well as an empirical perspective. It settles the issue in the context of EU integration and the EU ́s cohesion problem and provides systematic, analytical growth theory arguments with respect to EU regional development. This approach differs from the common view of the literature, which stresses regional development theories and regional policies when looking at EU regional problems. The volume provides unique, rich empirical evidence of European regional problems and growth patterns and investigates growth and convergence of EU regions with the latest econometric panel data methods. It offers new insights both for growth researchers and regional economists interested in developments in the European Union.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKConvergence, Cohesion and Integration in the European Union tackles the fundamental theoretical and empirical issues underlying the process of European integration. Two basic arguments underlie the book. The first is that economic convergence in postwar Europe has reduced the disparities between regions and that this has been an important accelerator of the drive for integration. The second is that, in contrast to the situation before 1985 when nation states dominated the move to integration, grass roots pressure has been the dominant force since the Single European Act and the preparation for the single market.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKRegional development strategies have become the focus of attention in many countries in the 1990s. This textbook provides a conceptual, theoretical and empirical analysis of regional development strategies within a European context It examines the various regional development strategies which are currently being pursued within the regions of Europe - defined in its loosest term to include East and West. The book describes how many different European regions are attempting to reduce regional disparities by engaging themselves in coherent and focused regional development strategies, and there is also private sector approach to regional economic development. There are many case studies from Europe and from other parts of the world, including Japan, thereby providing lessons that different countries and regions can learn form each other.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKRecent empirical studies on regional economic growth have extended regressions on convergence to account for externalities and spatial dependencies. Most of these studies, however, set the focus on whether regional output levels display convergence trends and consequently tend to ignore persisting or widening disparities that may occur at the same time. This paper examines the simultaneous occurrence of regional convergence and divergence tendencies in Europe by applying a spatial econometric model specification that is derived from a neoclassical growth model. Depending on factor endowments and relative locations in space, divergence may occur within sub-groups of regions despite an overall observation of convergence. The observation area comprises 253 European regions of the EU and EFTA on the NUTS2 and equivalent level, with empirical results provided for an observation period from 2001 to 2007.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book brings together a rich selection of up-to-date practical experience of EU regional policy from across Europe. It provides different perspectives on the design and operation of regional development strategies under the Structural Funds, from people closely involved in studying, managing or advising on the process at EU, national and regional levels. It therefore offers a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of the structural policies than has been available hitherto. This will prove particularly useful to researchers, practitioners and students interested in European regional policies and processes.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKInterpreting Convergence in the European Union introduces the idea of collective action as a prerequisite for achieving convergence and cohesion in the European Union. Institutional networks and social capital play a crucial role in influencing actors' preferences and shaping institutional interactions through the process of political exchange and socialization. Although the main focus of the book is on policymaking processes and governance structures in EU regional policy, its core theoretical hypotheses and conclusion are drawn from empirical research into the response of Greek regions to the challenges of Europeanization. This framework is applicable to almost all areas of EU public policymaking.
