El alto nivel de competitividad instalado en los mercados, unido a la creciente exigencia de los clientes, hacen que la gestión de costes sea un elemento primordial para la supervivencia de la empresa. Maximizar el margen es el primer objetivo económico de una empresa. Sin un margen adecuado el negocio no será viable. En la configuración del margen intervienen dos parámetros: el precio y el coste del producto. Mientras que el precio de venta lo establece el mercado, compuesto por los competidores y los clientes, el coste del producto lo gestiona la empresa. Ambos estarán afectados por la estrategia competitiva que la empresa adopte. Por ello, establecer un sistema que mida los costes en los que incurre un producto o servicio para ser fabricado o prestado, comercializado y distribuido, se convierte en un elemento fundamental del management. La información que se origina en la contabilidad financiera es insuficiente para tomar decisiones en determinados ámbitos de la empresa. Por este motivo se hace necesario disponer de un sistema que nos ofrezca una información diferente y no necesariamente asentada en la normativa y principios contables.
