« Qu'est-ce qu'être Français aujourd'hui » ? Telle est la question centrale d'un projet politique intitulé Grand débat sur l'identité nationale lancé par la droite sous la présidence de Nicolas Sarkozy en 2009-2010. L'intention de revaloriser l'identité nationale provoque différentes réactions à cette question à mille réponses et fait allusion aux changements sociaux, culturels et économiques de la France. Ce travail analyse l'approche politique, la référence et l'utilisation actuelle des concepts d'«identité», de « nation » et de « mémoire » tout au long du grand débat.

Schools and National Identities in French-speaking Africa showcases cutting-edge research to provide a renewed understanding of the role of schools in producing and reproducing national identities. Using individual case studies and comparative frameworks, it presents diverse empirical and theoretical insights from and about a range of African countries. The volume demonstrates in particular the usefulness of the curriculum as a lens through which to analyse the production and negotiation of national identities in different settings. Chapters discuss the tensions between decolonisation as a moment in time and decolonisation as a lengthy and messy process, the interplay between the local, national and international priorities of different actors, and the nuanced role of historiography and language in nation-building. At its heart is the need to critically investigate the concept of "the nation" as a political project, how discourses and feelings of belonging are constructed at school, and what it means for schools to be simultaneously places of learning, tools of socialisation and political battlegrounds. By presenting new research on textbooks, practitioners and policy in ten different African countries, this volume provides insights into the diversity of issues and dynamics surrounding the question of schools and national identities. It will be of particular interest to scholars, researchers and postgraduate students of comparative and international education, sociology, history, sociolinguistics and African studies.
L'identité nationale se présente comme une construction complexe ressortie de l'action continue et concertée des agents de socialisation. Parmi eux, le système d'enseignement occupe une place à part, contribuant par le discours promu au façonnement des images et des sentiments que les citoyens se construisent de l'espace national. La première partie de notre étude suit une approche théorique de l'identité nationale et de sa construction à l'école. Afin de comprendre la contribution du système d'enseignement à la construction de l'identité nationale des jeunes, on propose une analyse de contenu sur des manuels scolaires d'histoire (vu que l'histoire est l'un des éléments fondamentaux de l'identité nationale). L'analyse est réalisée à l'aide d'une grille structurée par les trois dimensions de l'identité nationale : territorialité, valeurs, communauté nationale. Les données recueillies mettent en évidence quelques conclusions qui visent : le profil identitaire national exigé par l'idéologie de gouvernement en France et en Roumanie à deux moments différents de leurs histoires ; les différences et les ressemblances entre les projets identitaires nationaux des systèmes d'enseignement français et roumain ; l'évolution du projet à l'égard de l'identité nationale dans chacun des deux espaces nationaux compris dans notre analyse.
L’identité, a toujours semblé dire Pierre Savard, ne doit pas être cherchée dans ce qui isole, ce qui sépare. Elle est une construction spécifique dont la dynamique, riche de la quantité ainsi que de la diversité des relations et des pratiques dont elle s’est nourrie, finit par exercer sur ces dernières une grande influence. C’est à ce dialogue entre les constructions identitaires et les pratiques sociales qu’a été consacré ce colloque, tenu à l’Université d’Ottawa et dédié à la mémoire de Pierre Savard. Les textes réunis en ces pages sont le fruit de cette rencontre pluridisciplinaire, qui, en plus de rendre hommage à un collègue trop tôt disparu, a présenté une vingtaine de communications tournant autour d’un thème très présent dans les débats actuels en sciences humaines, celui des constructions identitaires. Le colloque a voulu notamment mettre en évidence comment les acteurs, collectifs aussi bien qu’individuels, font et refont leur identité, et s’en servent, le plus souvent inconsciemment, pour orienter leurs activités; et comment, en retour, ils laissent aux pratiques le soin de donner une coloration particulière à leur identité. Puissent tous les articles issus de cette rencontre perpétuer le souvenir de Pierre Savard, l’homme et le scientifique, le professeur et l’éternel voyageur, celui qui, partout où il se trouvait, éveillait sympathie et enthousiasme.
Becoming French explores the geographical shift that occurs in French society during the first four decades of France's Third Republic government. Dana Kristofor Lindaman provides the historical context that led to the explosion of geographic interest at the end of the nineteenth century, exploring the ways that the work of the geographers Paul Vidal de la Blache and Élisée Reclus served as a conceptual basis for abstract notions of the nation such as la Patrie. Lindaman then uses Reclus's formulation of the earth as "une organisme terrestre" (terrestrial organism) to read Jules Verne's Voyage au centre de la terre (Journey to the Center of the Earth) as a journey to the center of the individual self. Finally, he traces the geographic narrative of G. Bruno's Tour de la France par deux enfants, in particular the way that Bruno's work incorporates the geographic thought of Vidal de la Blache, to discover the organic ties that bind readers through the shared experience of reading the text.
