DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Constitution and by-Laws of the Saint Louis Mercantile Library Association: Originally Adopted 1846 We, the subscribers, principally engaged in mercantile pursuits in the city of St. Louis - desirous of securing the most efficient means for facilitating mutual intercourse; extending our information upon mercantile and other subjects of general utility; promoting a spirit of useful Inquiry, and qualifying ourselves to discharge properly the duties of our profession, and the social offices of life - have associated for the purpose of collecting a library and cabinet, establishing a reading room, and organizing a system of instruction, by lectures, classes and such other means of mutual improvement as may be found advantageous, and have, for our organization and government, adopted this constitution. Chapter I. Of Members. Article 1. This Association shall be known by the name of the "St. Louis Mercantile Library Association." Art. 2. This Association shall be composed of persons engaged in mercantile pursuits, and of such other persons as may be elected honorary members by the Board of Direction, or as shall become members as is hereinafter provided. Art. 3. Any person, engaged in mercantile pursuits, may, upon the approval of the Board of Direction, become a member of this Association on, the following terms: Subscribing the constitution; and if a clerk, paying an initiation fee of two dollars, and the farther sum of three dollars, per annum, in advance; and if in business on his own account, paying an initiation fee of five dollars, and the farther sum of five dollars, per annum, in advance.
