This publication is an update and expanded version of the very popular historical publication introduced in 1991. It presents basic counts, totals, percentage changes and percent distributions for an expanded set of variables at the Canada and province levels for the 1976,1981, 1986, 1991 and 1996 Censuses of Agriculture. Two new sections have been added for 1996: the first presents 75 years of Census of Agriculture data (1921 to 1996) for selected variables and the second highlights the change between 1991 and 1996 in the series of land management practices variables introduced in 1991.

This publication presents area profiles tables for all 1996 farm variables at the provinces, census agricultural region and census division levels. Three additional tables are included: a small area data table with selected variables tabulated at the census division and census consolidated subdivision levels and two cross-classified tables at the province level. The 1996 Census of Agriculture questionnaire is also included for user's reference. Finally, this publication contains reference maps which identify the location of all geographic areas tabulated for British Columbia.
