Starting with the end of the Second World War there has been a remarkable growth in multinational corporations. The current public attention to these corporations is due, at least in part, to their recent expansion and to the increasingly significant role that they are playing in both national economies and the world economy. The greatest corporate growth and national legal development have both taken place in the developed-country context. However, with growing world economic interdependence and growing sophistication of the economies of less-developed countries, the experience of developed countries is sure to be of relevance to all planners, whatever the level of their nation's economic development. This article considers some of the types of tensions and conflicts which the existence and operations of multinational corporations create. The article begins with a brief description of the rapid growth of multinational corporations. Section II analyzes types of conflict, which for analytical purposes can be divided into three basic groups: (a) conflict between multinational corporations and host countries, (b) conflict between multinational corporations and home countries, and (c) conflicts between host countries and home countries engendered by the activities of multinational corporations. Section III describes the present pattern of controls and regulations in the important areas of export (and import) control, securities regulation, antitrust regulation, and taxation. In the final section, we give our suggestions for regulating and controlling multinational corporations in the international arena.

Nigeria, Africa's most populated country is rich in ethnic diversity - a reason why it suffers from many conflicts. The country is one of the top five oil producers. The recent resource crisis in the Niger Delta is caused by poor division of resources, underdevelopment, and mismanagement. The failure of the young democracy would have a vehement effect in the country and in Africa as a whole. The government has to consolidate its democracy, uphold unity and sovereignty. To secure democracy it will need support from the Nigerians themselves, the multinational oil companies and the international world.

This book, a by-product of a combination of experience and research, contains the model that may potentially end violent conflicts between multinational corporations (MNCs) and their host communities. The author believes that MNCs and host communities can engage in gainful transactions. Thus, he developed the zero-violent conflict model, a checklist for multinational corporations and host nations consideration when choosing host communities for MNCs and accepting MNCs for host communities. The chapter on social change is an attempt to make a case for implementing the zero-violent conflict model.

Scholars and statesmen have debated the influence of international commerce on war and peace for thousands of years. Over the centuries, analysts have generally treated the questions "Does international commerce influence security?" and "Do trade flows influence security?" as synonymous. In Producing Security, Stephen Brooks maintains that such an overarching focus on the security implications of trade once made sense but no longer does. Trade is no longer the primary means of organizing international economic transactions; rather, where and how multinational corporations (MNCs) organize their international production activities is now the key integrating force of global commerce. MNC strategies have changed in a variety of fundamental ways over the past three decades, Brooks argues, resulting in an increased geographic dispersion of production across borders. The author shows that the globalization of production has led to a series of shifts in the global security environment. It has a differential effect on security relations, in part because it does not encompass all countries and industries to the same extent. The book's findings indicate that the geographic dispersion of MNC production acts as a significant force for peace among the great powers. The author concludes that there is no basis for optimism that the globalization of production will promote peace elsewhere in the world. Indeed, he finds that it has a net negative influence on security relations among developing countries.

Identifies and diagnoses many highly controversial topics relating to conflict management in multinational companies, proposing ways of coping with them that are both intellectually defensible and managerially feasible. Describes the entire context of nonmarket conflict facing the multinational firm through the experience of five multinationals. Develops a system for effective diagnosis and management of such conflict and proceeds to discuss each of the major sources of conflict. A conflict management model is applied in each case. Final chapter focuses on international control of multinational enterprises and how such firms can effectively organize themselves for conflict management.
