Racek seems to have authored much of this work after the death of J. T. Penney and undertook a study and review of Penny's huge colleciton of material and unpublished data at the recommendation of B. Theodore Cole of the University of South Carolina. In view of the voluminous material available, Racek found it imperative to revise all true gemmule-producing species rather than elaborate Penny's outlined account of the Meyeninae and as a result of the study, demonstrated the fallacy of a subdivision of the family Spongillidae by using gemmosclere characteristics.
Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates: Keys to Palaearctic Fauna, Fourth Edition, is part of a multivolume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world that began with Vol. I: Ecology and General Biology (2015), then Vol. II (2016) Keys to Nearctic Fauna, and finally in Vol. III (2018) Keys to Neotropical Hexapoda (insects and springtails). This third volume in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research series deals with the major terrestrial, algal, and siliceous indicators used in paleolimnology. Other volumes deal with the acquisition and archiving of lake sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods (Volume 1), physical and geochemical parameters and methods (Volume 2), zoological techniques (Volume 4), and statistical and data handling methods (Volume 5). These monographs will provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments.
