Excerpt from Composition for Naval Officers The work in compo itiou, as planned in this book, differs from the usua treatments of the subjects in that it is designed to meet the special needs of the naval ofiicer. Much that is usually studied in text books ou composition is therefore omitted in order that certain essentials may be emphasized. The venerable band of brothers, Narration, Description, Exposition, and Argumentation, are here given a leave of absence in order that the midshipman may put his time and energy into the fundamentals of English and the spe cific forms of expression that he is bound to employ throughout his career. It is also the idea of the authors to condense the text in order that less time may be spent in reading advice about writing and more time put on actual writing. This book does not pretend to be a complete treatment of composition. It pre supposes the presence of a trained instructor in the section room, who can be depended on to supplement the text whenever necessary. Excerpt from Recollections of a Naval Officer, 1841-1865 Yes, sir, a schooner. By George, said the officers in the ward room, old Brown is right, after all! After awhile the strange sail was reached, and proved to be a merchant schooner bound to Pensacola. The commodore, in a great rage, sent for Brown and said: Did you not say the schooner Bonita bore S. S. E. Fifteen miles off? Well, sir, ' said Brown, the reckoning called for a schooner; but it did not say it was the Bonita I Now the moral of this is that this reckoning calls for a schooner, but no particular schooner so if any fellow expects his schooner to be mentioned he may find himself mistaken. I wish to say here, with Captain Kincaid of the rifle battalion: That this is my book; and if any man wishes his name or services to be specially mentioned, let him write a book for himself. Excerpt from Official Letters of the Military and Naval Officers of the United States, During the War With Great Britain in the Years 1812, 13, 14, and 15: With Some Additional Letters and Documents Elucidating the History of That Period Against this crying enormity which Great Britain would be so prompt to avenge if committed against herself, the United States lave in vain exhausted remonstrances and expostulations. And that no proof might be wanting of their conciliatory dispositions, and no pretext left for a continuance of the practice, the British government was formally assured of the readiness of the United States to enter into arrangements, such as could not be rejected, if the recovery of British subjects was the real and the sole object. The communication passed Without effect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lives of Distinguished American Naval Officers, Vol. 1: Bainbridge, Shaw, Somers, Shubrick, Preble These sketches originally appeared in Graham's Magazine, a periodical for which they pressly written. The present Opportunity for eh larginghcorrecting, and, it is hoped, for improving them, has not been neglected. Many errors of the press, and some mistakes in facts, have been at tended to, while new matter is occasionally intro duced, as authentic materials have been obtained, through the attention that has been drawn to the subject by means of the former publication. In the cases of Paul J ones and Oliver Hazard Perry, in particular, the first appearance of the respective sketches brought into 'our hands a' considerable amount of additional documents that have thrown new light on the several careers of those two offi cers. In the case of Paul Jones, it is true that our testimony is derived from relatives, and to a 'certain point is to be received with caution; all experience proving that the opinions of near friends are not to be accepted, in such cases, as guides for the world. Proof is proof, nevertheless, when all its conditions are fulfilled, let it come from what quarter it may.
