Vortex Dynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Planetary Atmospheres introduces the reader with a background in either fluid mechanics or statistical mechanics to the modeling of planetary atmospheres by barotropic and shallow-water models. These potent models are introduced in both analytical and numerical treatments highlighting the ways both approaches inform and enlighten the other. This book builds on Vorticity, Statistical Mechanics, and Monte Carlo Simulations by Lim and Nebus in providing a rare introduction to this intersection of research fields. While the book reaches the cutting edge of atmospheric models, the exposition requires little more than an undergraduate familiarity with the relevant fields of study, and so this book is well suited to individuals hoping to swiftly learn an exciting new field of study. With inspiration drawn from the atmospheres of Venus and of Jupiter, the physical relevance of the work is never far from consideration, and the bounty of results shows a new and fruitful perspective with which to study planetary atmospheres.

This book aims to provide the readers with a wide panorama of different aspects related to Chaos, Complexity and Transport. It consists of a collection of contributions ranging from applied mathematics to experiments, presented during the CCT'07 conference (Marseilles, June 4-8, 2007). The book encompasses different traditional fields of physics and mathematics while trying to keep a common language among the fields, and targets a nonspecialized audience.

At the crossing of centuries, it is very important to review the main problems and research in theoretical physics. This was the purpose of the International Workshop on Frontiers of Theoretical Physics, allowing the interchange of ideas among people with different expertise. The proceedings can be divided into two parts: (1) general view talks about string, particle physics, nuclear physics, etc. given by Profs. T Yoneya, M Kobayazhi, A Sanda, Z Li and F Sakata; (2) research related to many important fields, such as quantum field theory, string theory, particle physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics and mathematical physics. Contents: Aspects of Current Particle Physics (M Kobayashi); CP Violation Past, Present and Future (A I Sanda); Nonlinear Science in Nuclear Physics (F Sakata); String Theory OCo Where are We Now? (T Yoneya); The Descent Equation of Noncommutative Differential Geometry on Lattice (K Wu); Supersymmetry for Flavors (C Liu); Quantization on Manifolds and Induced Gauge Potentials (Y Ohnuki); Chiral Lagrangian in QCD (Q Wang & Z-M Wang); and other papers. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics."

There is considerable interest in the intrinsically multiscale structure and dynamics of complex electronic oxides, especially since these materials include those of technological importance, such as colossal magnetoresistance manganites and cuprate high temperature superconductors. Current microscopies, such as diffuse X-ray and inelastic neutron scattering, electromagnetic and acoustic response, NMR and scanning tunneling microscope probes, have revealed static and dynamic multiscale patterns in charge positioning, lattice structure and magnetic orientation, that respond to both external stress and magnetic field. These self-organized patterns include charge and orbital ordering; stripes in strain/spin; and labyrinth-like conductance modulations. The materials exhibit nanoscale phase segregation and mesoscale inhomogeneous clustering, and their phase transitions can have a percolative character. This volume presents experimental and theoretical work on these exciting new developments in condensed matter physics and materials science.

Roughening dynamics of various interface problems has been an attractive topic recently. The subject is related to many interdisciplinary branches in nonequilibrium statistical physics such as crystal growth, vortex dynamics, fractals and chaos, and self-organized critical phenomena. This volume includes pedagogical reviews of the scaling concepts in fluctuating surfaces, current theories on expitaxial growth phenomena and interface dynamics in disordered media, and many other related topics. Thus it serves as a valuable reference for both graduate students and researchers in statistical physics and materials science.
