An Overview of the Coronavirus and the Measures Taken to Avoid an Epidemic ROBYN CURNOW, CNN ANCHOR So, scientists are trying to figure out just how quickly this virus is spreading. Of course, we’ve heard from Xi Jinping that it’s accelerating, but how dangerous is it as well? Sanjay Gupta explains for us. Sanjay. DR. SANJAY GUPTA, CNN CORRESPONDENT One of the questions we get often is: how similar is this to SARS? And it’s worth pointing out that this is the same family of viruses—this new virus and the SARS virus. You can take a look at it, there. That’s the coronavirus. It’s named that because corona is crown, and you can see that has a crown. What we know is that some time in December, the virus started spreading from animals to humans. We knew that that was happening, and then we also learned that it was spreading [from] human to human—that’s what really got the public health’s [health] communities’ attention on this. And what we now know is that this is spreading [from] human to human, fourth generation, which is exactly what it sounds like—someone spreads it to someone else, they spread it to several more people, and so on and so on. And that’s where the spread and the concern about this becoming more widespread really comes from. Now, when you look at a pathogen like this … take a quick look at this box … there’s [there are] two things that matter, really: how quickly it spreads—what I was just talking about—and then, how deadly it is. If it’s not that deadly [and] doesn’t spread that much, that would put you in the A box. The concern is … the worst-case scenario is that this goes into the D box, there—highly transmissible and highly lethal as well. As far as the containment efforts, I mean, it’s chaos, as you’ve probably seen now in … at least in this area—around Wuhan. Tens of millions of people who are on lockdown—meaning they’re not allowing vehicles in or vehicles to go out. This is a … it’s a very strong policy; it’s an aggressive policy; it’s typically a policy that is done later in stages of an outbreak as opposed to this early. And it’s unclear whether China’s just being very aggressive or whether they are dealing with data that we are not yet familiar with because it is an aggressive policy over there. They’re also recommending everyone wear masks, for example, in Wuhan. And just a quick tidbit, I’ll tell you. The masks, as you might imagine, are not going to stop viral particles from getting into your nose and your mouth. They can get through the mask or around the mask. What they really do more than anything else, as I’ve seen covering these stories, is that they prevent you from touching your nose and your mouth, which is also one of the most common ways this virus is transmitted. WHO Declares Coronavirus a Global Health Emergency as Virus Continues to Spread The group dominates the multibillion-dollar K-pop industry. It’s got seven members, all known for their colorful haircuts, slick dancing and record-breaking album sales. In 2019, they became the first group in history to spend five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 Chart. Their most recent record sold more than three million copies in South Korea alone, making it the country’s best-selling album of all time. BTS also holds the world record for the most YouTube music video views in 24 hours—a massive 74.6 million. But great success breeds great expectations. The band’s new album comes out on Friday, so expect colossal scrutiny. BTS aren’t overnight stars. The group was manufactured in 2013, created as a hip-hop act by start-up label Big Hit Entertainment. Originally, the name was drawn from the Korean expression bangtan sonyeondan, which roughly translates to Bulletproof Boy Scouts, but then, they began attracting fans in the U.S. and around the world. This is them appearing on Saturday Night Live. In 2017, BTS announced their name would officially stand for Beyond The Scene. The K-pop industry is notoriously high-pressured. To break into it, BTS members assumed stage names and shared details about their work and lives on social media, bringing them ever closer to their legions of fans, and a legion it is—over 24 million followers and counting on Twitter, many of whom are fiercely loyal. And it’s these fans, known as the A.R.M.Y, who’ve driven the band from [a] popular group to global superstars. Many of them stream BTS’ songs constantly to ensure the act keeps breaking records. A.R.M.Y members also run fan websites, pack concert venues and monitor media coverage. Elements of the fandom are notorious. Some of the band’s followers can be sensitive to any perceived slight. But BTS know the importance of that fan base, and they never forget to thank them. RM, BAND LEADER & RAPPER, BTS We’re living the dream. So, I just [have] to say thanks to all of the A.R.M.Ys. They made us. They gave us … they give us force. BIANCA NOBILO, “THE BRIEF” So, what can we expect from BTS’ latest album? Well, watch out for more streaming records to be broken and more stadiums to sell out. While some boy bands struggle with the pressures [of] early success, this group shows no signs of slowing down. 我要向所有A.R.M.Y說謝謝。 政治 Bernie or Biden? Do liberal Western democracies share a common understanding of democracy? If so, why is there a transatlantic divide over the promotion of democracy? While the US applies a bottom-up strategy in this respect, the European Union pursues a top-down approach. While there is consensus as to the desirability of the external promotion of democracy, disagreement persists as to what kinds of strategies work more effectively. This book suggests that differences between the US and Europe in terms of the promotion of democracy derive from different historical backgrounds, experiences with political modernisation and, hence, historically embedded conceptions of democracy. Democracy promoters choose instruments that advance their vision of an ideal transition and that are congruent with their respective understandings of democracy. This book's analysis of media debates in four Western democracies reveals different understandings with regard to the key aspects of democracy across the Atlantic and contributes to research on the transatlantic divide in this regard.

Sets out a comprehensive framework of analysis for security studies, examining the distinctive character and dynamics of security in five sectors: military, political, economic, environmental, and societal. It rejects traditionalists' case for restricting security in one sector, arguing that security is a particular type of politics applicable to a wide range of issues, and offers a constructivist operational method for distinguishing the process of securitization from that of politicization. The deep sea covers over 60% of the surface of the earth, yet less than 1% has been scientifically investigated. There is growing pressure on deep-sea resources and on researchers to deliver information on biodiversity and the effects of human impacts on deep-sea ecosystems. Although scientific knowledge has increased rapidly in recent decades, there exist large gaps in global sampling coverage of the deep sea, and major efforts continue to be directed into offshore research. Biological Sampling in the Deep Sea represents the first comprehensive compilation of deep-sea sampling methodologies for a range of habitats. It reviews the real life applications of current, and in some instances developing, deep-sea sampling tools and techniques. In creating this book the authors have been able to draw upon the experiences of those at the coal face of deep-sea sampling, expanding on the existing methodological texts whilst encompassing a level of technical detail often omitted from journal publications. Ultimately the book will promote international consistency in sampling approaches and data collection, advance the integration of information into global databases, and facilitate improved data analyses and consequently uptake of science results for the management and conservation of the deep-sea environment. The book will appeal to a range of readers, including students, early-career through to seasoned researchers, as well as environmental managers and policy makers wishing to understand how the deep-sea is sampled, the challenges associated with deep survey work, and the type of information that can be obtained.

Recognizing rapidly ageing population is one key concern faced by cities and the challenge it would present to healthcare system, this book looks at ageing in China’s population as well as the delivery and financing of long-term care (LTC) in China. The book compares key features of long-term care insurance (LTCI) schemes in 15 pilot cities and evaluates the sustainability of various financing models adopted by the cities in the LTCI schemes. The book uses an interpretive case study approach to give an in-depth look into the LTC models in three pilot cities – Qingdao, Nantong, and Shanghai. The three cities represent three different models of financing and delivering LTC. To assess how effective the LTC models in these three cities are, the book uses five criteria, including utilization of medical resources, cost, equity, quality of care and sustainability. Also, the authors discuss how the financing and delivery of LTC can be improved in China, the impact of the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on older adults in need of LTC in the country and the implications of China’s LTCI reform for other countries. The book will be a useful reference to scholars and policy-makers who look at urban ageing and healthcare costs and delivery.
