Victoria Greene always thought that returning to London would put her life back in some sort of order. The adventure was over, the mission completed, and she assumed she could continue her work with machines in peace, but Vic should have known that such a thing was not possible. Instead, she suddenly finds herself dealing with judgmental Elite, the corrupt High Council, and the certainty that London has deeper secrets than she ever knew. When the Queen of England sends Vic and her men on yet another task of the highest importance, Vic is relieved, if only to escape the city that feels less like home than an airship. But Vic is not the only one racing around the world. The High Council is on their tail, and they have no qualms about doing anything it takes to win. Now, the Lost City of Kásskara beckons, and with Bram, Emory, Jules, and Jed by her side, Vic must find the sunken world fast. There are too many perplexities surrounding the disappearance of Kásskara and no one wants to speak its name. Some cities should never be discovered. Some machines should never be created. Some secrets were meant to die in the past. And sometimes, it is better to follow the compass than the clock. . . In 1883, Thaniel Steepleton returns to his tiny flat to find a gold pocketwatch on his pillow. But he has worse fears than generous burglars; he is a telegraphist at the Home Office, which has just received a threat for what could be the largest-scale Fenian bombing in history. When the watch saves Thaniel's life in a blast that destroys Scotland Yard, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori a kind, lonely immigrant who sweeps him into a new world of clockwork and music. Although Mori seems harmless at first, a chain of unexpected slips soon proves that he must be hiding something. Meanwhile, Grace Carrow is sneaking into an Oxford library dressed as a man. A theoretical physicist, she is desperate to prove the existence of the luminiferous ether before her mother can force her to marry. As the lives of these three characters become entwined, events spiral out of control until Thaniel is torn between loyalties, futures and opposing geniuses. Utterly beguiling, The Watchmaker of Filigree Street blends historical events with dazzling flights of fancy to plunge readers into a strange and magical past, where time, destiny, genius - and a clockwork octopus - collide.

Victoria Greene would rather spend her time with machines than the high society she comes into contact with in London. She's happy with her gears and cogs, even if that means she will end up a spinster. When her father gets the funding for a trip to the Amazon to search for a mythical jewel, she jumps on the chance to come aboard as the Master Tinker. She expected to work on the massive boilers for the airship and to tinker with her mechanical creatures. She never expected the men suddenly thrown into her life making it even more interesting. The inventor, the cowboy, the scholar, and the dreamer are all intrigued by the woman who comes with grease on her face. But something sinister is amiss aboard the airship and she's determined to get to the bottom of it. Victoria's suspicion rises the closer they get to Brazil and she must figure out the nefarious plans before it's too late. Can Victoria protect them all against the dangers, from onboard and the rainforest alike? Can such an eclectic team work together and find the Temple of the Rising Sun? Natasha Pulley's Watchmaker of Filigree Street captivated readers with its charming blend of historical fiction, fantasy, and steampunk. Now, Pulley revisits her beloved characters in a sequel that sweeps readers off to Japan in the 1880s, where nationalism is on the rise and ghosts roam the streets. 1888. Five years after they met in The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, Thaniel Steepleton, an unassuming translator, and Keita Mori, the watchmaker who remembers the future, are traveling to Japan. Thaniel has received an unexpected posting to the British legation in Tokyo, and Mori has business that is taking him to Yokohama. Thaniel's brief is odd: the legation staff have been seeing ghosts, and Thaniel's first task is to find out what's really going on. But while staying with Mori, he starts to experience ghostly happenings himself. For reasons Mori won't--or can't--share, he is frightened. Then he vanishes. Meanwhile, something strange is happening in a frozen labor camp in Northern Japan. Takiko Pepperharrow, an old friend of Mori's, must investigate. As the weather turns bizarrely electrical and ghosts haunt the country from Tokyo to Aokigahara forest, Thaniel grows convinced that it all has something to do with Mori's disappearance--and that Mori may be in serious danger. "Wonderful... A lovely blending of steam punk ether science, Japanese historical figures, and a time-defying thriller." Robin Hobb, author of THE FARSEER TRILOGY

This book develops Gregory Bateson’s ideas regarding “communication about relationship” in animals and human beings, and even nations. It bases itself on Bateson’s theory of relational communication, as he described it in the zoosemiotics of octopus, mammals, birds, and human beings. This theory includes, for example, the roles of metaphor, play, analog and digital communication, metacommunication, and Laws of Form. It is organized around a letter from Gregory Bateson to his fellow cybernetic thinker Warren McCulloch at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In this letter Bateson argued that what we would today call zoosemiotics, including Bateson’s own (previously unpublished) octopus research, should be made a basis for understanding the relationship between the two blocs of the Cold War. Accordingly the book shows how Bateson understood interactive processes in the biosemiotics of conflict and peacemaking, which are analyzed using examples from recent animal studies, from primate studies, and from cultural anthropology. The Missile Crisis itself is described in terms of Bateson’s critique of game theory which he felt should be modified by an understanding of the zoosemiotics of relational communication. The book also includes a previously unpublished piece by Gregory Bateson on wolf behavior and metaphor/ abduction.

Johanna Adalwolf has spent years avoiding the Lariat Clan and the wolf who resides there. She wants nothing to do with Nicolas Olcan and his playboy ways. With her business on the edge of greatness and an opportunity to enter the Race Games appearing, she can feel success on the horizon. But fate has a funny way of messing things up. The wolf clan alphas will only approve her entry under one condition: Race with Nicolas, or don’t race at all. Now she’s stuck with the arrogant wolf she hoped to never see again, fated or not. The last time they’d seen each other, she’d given him a swift kick in the shins and some choice words, but the Nicolas who appears has grown up. She shouldn’t be giving him side glances and thinking about how things could be different, not with so much at stake. It should have been easy— enter the Race games, win, take home the prize— but it’s clear from the beginning that things aren’t as they seem with the Supernatural Council or The Games. At every turn, someone is trying to stop them from crossing the finish line. The corruption runs deep, and without realizing it, Johanna and Nicolas find themselves in the thick of it. Someone doesn’t want the wolves to race. Too bad the wolves were always meant to run wild. . .
