Process equipment and piping in chemical and petrochemical plants and petroleum refineries have to be cleaned periodically as part of normal maintenance operations to remove fouling that interferes with process flow, heat transfer, or other operations. Cleaning is also necessary to allow safe personnel entry prior to equipment inspection, repairs, or modifications. Most cleaning operations are expensive and time-consuming and need to be planned, budgeted, and carried out in a timely fashion to ensure minimum interference with normal process or maintenance operations. Certain process equipment and piping may also have to be cleaned prior to being put into service for the first time. Such pre-commission cleaning removes rust, dirt, and other debris that formed or entered during fabrication, shipment, or erection, and that are likely to cause damage after start-up. process equipment and piping in chemical plants, petrochemical plants and petroleum refineries. Practical information and guidance is provided for plant engineers and operators who, from time to time, are charged with planning various cleaning operations that will be carried out either by in-house maintenance personnel or outside cleaning contractors. Sufficient information is given to enable the nonspecialist to either propose cleaning procedures or evaluate cleaning procedures proposed by others. The manual enumerates a multitude of factors that need to be considered before a cleaning operation is started, including timing, alternative methods, costs, manpower requirements, safety concerns, and waste disposal issues.

Casestudies and/ or actual industry examples are used to support the textwherever possible. While much of the material contained within thistext is equally applicable to nonbiopharmaceutical processes, theemphasis has been focused directly upon biopharmaceuticalmanufacturing.Section I provides an in-depth analysis of the design concepts thatlead to cleanable equipment. Also covered in the tirst section arecleaning mechanisms and cleaning systems. The first section isparticularly useful to those persons faced with the task of designingsystems that will be cleaned and also provides the biochemicaloockground of the mechanisms associated with the removal of commonbiotechnology soils.Section II focuses on cleaning validation concepts. While thematerial is equally useful for single product cleaning, emphasis isplaced upon multiproduct cleaning validation. Included in Section IIare general validation principles as thex apply to cleaning validation, detailed analxsis of cleaning process validation, sampling techniques, analytical methods and acceptance criteria. The material in this sectionwill be useful to anyone responsible for the development of a cleaningvalidation program. The final section, Section Ill, provides an overview of multiproductbiotechnology manufacturing procedures. Included in this section is ananalysis of tne risk-to-benefit scenarios associated with the various formsof product manufacturing, analysis of changeover programs, ~uipmentconsiderations, and material transfer systems as they are affected bymultiproduct manufacturing strategies.

The only comprehensive and authoritative reference guide to the ASME Bioprocessing Piping and Equipment (BPE) standard This is a companion guide to the ASME Bioprocessing Piping and Equipment (BPE) Standard and explains what lies behind many of the requirements and recommendations within that industry standard. Following an introductory narrative to the Standard's early history, industry related codes and standards are explained; the design and engineering aspects cover construction materials, both metallic and nonmetallic; then components, fabrication, assembly and installation of piping systems are explored. Examination, Inspection and Testing then precede the ASME BPE certification process, concluding with a discussion on system design. The author draws on many years' experience and insights from first-hand involvement in the field of industrial piping design, engineering, construction, and management, which includes the bioprocessing industry. The reader will learn why dimensions and tolerances, process instrumentation, and material selection play such an integral part in the manufacture of components and instrumentation. This easy to understand and navigate guide will assist engineers (design, piping, chemical, etc.) who need to understand the basis for much of the Standard’s content, as do the contractors and inspectors who have to meet and validate compliance with the BPE Standard.

This text covers the design of food processing equipment based on key unit operations, such as heating, cooling, and drying. In addition, mechanical processing operations such as separations, transport, storage, and packaging of food materials, as well as an introduction to food processes and food processing plants are discussed. Handbook of Food Processing Equipment is an essential reference for food engineers and food technologists working in the food process industries, as well as for designers of process plants. The book also serves as a basic reference for food process engineering students. The chapters cover engineering and economic issues for all important steps in food processing. This research is based on the physical properties of food, the analytical expressions of transport phenomena, and the description of typical equipment used in food processing. Illustrations that explain the structure and operation of industrial food processing equipment are presented. style="font-size: 13.3333330154419px;">The materials of construction and fabrication of food processing equipment are covered here, as well as the selection of the appropriate equipment for various food processing operations. Mechanical processing equipment such as size reduction, size enlargement, homogenization, and mixing are discussed. Mechanical separations equipment such as filters, centrifuges, presses, and solids/air systems, plus equipment for industrial food processing such as heat transfer, evaporation, dehydration, refrigeration, freezing, thermal processing, and dehydration, are presented. Equipment for novel food processes such as high pressure processing, are discussed. The appendices include conversion of units, selected thermophysical properties, plant utilities, and an extensive list of manufacturers and suppliers of food equipment.

First-line managers have to maintain the integrity of facilities, control manufacturing processes, and handle unusual or emergency situations, as well as respond to the pressures of production demand. On a daily basis, they are closest to the operating personnel who may be injured by a process accident, and they are in the best position to spot problem conditions and to act to contain them. This book offers these managers "how-to" information on process safety management program execution in the operations and maintenance departments, recommending technical and administrative process safety activities for the entire life cycle of the plant. Helpful tables and references add to the value of this process safety resource.
