Excerpt from Classical Examination Papers: Edited With Notes and References My object in editing this volume has been supply masters and pupils alike with an ample variety of questions for practice. Any one who has had to prepare candidates for competitive examinations, in which Classical or Historical questions of a miscellaneous character form part, can, I think, bear testimony to the difficulty hitherto found, as a rule, in directing such a course of reading as may be advantageous; I trust that this volume, containing as it does questions on almost every conceivable point of scholarship, criticism, or antiquities, will do something to remove that difficulty. The high character of the Examinations, in which the questions were originally proposed, will be sufficient guarantee for their value. I have aimed at making the Notes suggestive; not, by any means, complete. I do not think that I have given too little help; I trust, at the same time, that I have not, as a rule, given too much.
