Excerpt from Dialogues From Dickens In arranging my first volume of Dialogues, it was my aim to make each scene entirely independent of every other, as I thought that so they would be best adapted to school purposes; at the same time, by bringing closely together those scenes which were taken from the same novel, I intended to show that there was ascertain connection between them, and to suggest the idea of grouping them in the form of dramas for evening entertainments. Finding that the possibility of such a use of the dialogues had been generally overlooked, I took occasion, in the preface to the third edition of the book, to call attention to it, and to give an outline of several little plays which I had myself formed in that way, and which had been performed with success. In this volume I have pursued a different course, and instead of a collection of dialogues which might be grouped into dramas, I have arranged a number of dramas which may be, if desired, separated into dialogues, nearly every scene containing enough of interest in itself to render it acceptable as a part of a school exhibition. Excerpt from Anatol a Sequence of Dialogues Anatol, an idle young bachelor, lives in a charming flat in Vienna. That he has taste, besides means to indulge it, may be seen by his rooms, the furniture he buys, the pictures he hangs on the walls. And if such things indicate character, one would judge, first by the material comfort of the place and then by the impatience for new ideas which his sense of what is beautiful to live with seems to show, that though a hedonist, he is sceptical of even that easy faith. Towards dusk one afternoon he comes home bringing with him his friend max. They reach the sitting-room, talking. Max. Well, Anatol, I envy you. Anatol. My dear Max! Max. Perfectly astonishing. I've always said it was all tricks. But he went off to sleep under my very eyes... and then he danced when you told him he was a ballet dancer and cried when you said his sweetheart was dead... and he sentenced that criminal very soundly when you'd made him a judge. Anatol. Didn't he? Max. Its wizardry! Anatol. We can all be wizards to some extent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from New Dialogues and Plays: Primary, Intermediate, Advanced; Adapted From the Popular Works or Well-Known Authors Dramatization of popular novels is the fashion of the day. In this volume are dramatizations of a somewhat different kind. Many novels utterly unsuited to complete dramatization have striking scenes full of dramatic possibilities. A few such scenes are here presented as dialogues. They are for children, for school boys and girls, for "studies" in professional schools of dramatic training, and even for entertainments of the highest class and professional aim. Too many books of dialogues have been published without any particular reference to actual performance on platform or stage. There are no suggestions of stage business; the characters neither enter nor leave; while the dialogue progresses, no one apparently moves or feels emotion. Nothing is said at the beginning of the dialogue to show the situation of the characters; no hints are given as to the part about to be played. In plays, as ordinarily printed, there is very little to show either character or situation, all must be found out by a thorough study of the play. This may be well for the careful student, but the average amateur has no time, and often only little inclination, to peruse a whole play or a whole novel in order to play a little part in an entertainment. Perhaps the strongest feature of this book is the carefully prepared introduction to each dialogue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Polite Conversation: In Three Dialogues In some ways nothing could be a better introduction to the "Polite Conversation" than the account of it which Mr. Thackeray has given in his "English Humourists" (though under the head of Steele, not Swift), as illustrating the society of the period. That account is in its way not much less of a classic than the immortal original itself, and it is purely delightful. But it neither deals nor pretends to deal with the whole of the subject Indeed, the idea of Swift's character which the Conversation gives does not square altogether well with the view - true, but one-sided - which it suited Mr. Thackeray to take of Swift.
