DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis report describes a project which assessed the California General Plan process as a tool for implementing sustainable development, with focus on transportation systems at the local level, and including the relationship of local transportation systems to regional and statewide systems. The project involved a literature review on the California General Plan process, the nature of sustainabilty and sustainable transportation, and criteria and evaluation methods for plans. Detailed analyses were conducted of policies from 26 General Plans against criteria designed to measure transportation sustainabilty and plan quality. In-depth case studies of the General Plan process were conducted in seven California communities. Results from informant interviews were also included.
