Excerpt from Chronicles of Glenbuckie It may be said in introducing these Chronicles that the characters depicted in them lived, moved, and had their being in a parish covering an area of less than twenty-five square miles. Glenbuckie may, however, be taken as typical of many other parishes in Scotland during the same eventful years. The period of time embraced is that between the passing of the Reform Bill in 1832 and the Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843. Glenbuckie is situated in the county of Ayr - in that portion of it known as "Cunningham." The parish is bounded on the west by the sea, and on the east by a pleasant range of green hills. In the valley between these boundaries the village nestles snugly in surroundings of pastoral slopes and leafy shades. On the hillside above the village there is a substantial ruin, open to the elements, whose grey walls are laced with ivy, and freshened by an undergrowth of delicate lichens and ferns.
