Samartha argues that the problem with the christological dogmas of the first Ecumenical Councils is not their truth so much as their interpretation, and the un-Christian zealotry they seem to engender in Christians. Sensitive to charges of sentiments of racial and cultural superiority that stem from Christians believing themselves uniquely authorized agents of God, Samartha challenges us to admit the truth of these accusations, and to revise our understanding of Jesus. Without such christological revisions, Samartha fears, Christianity may cease to be Christian, may become enfeebled in the pursuit of justice for the oppressed, alienated from the deeper challenge of Jesus, sealed off from the truths of other religions, and, ultimately, may be barred from experiencing the rich and mysterious encounter of God.

This, the shortest of Edward Schillebeeckx's books so far, represents a distillation of his previous thought and contains important anticipations of the long-awaited third volume of his great trilogy, which is nearing completion. The fact that it was delivered in spring 1986 as the Abraham Kuyper lectures in Amsterdam accounts not only for its brevity, but also for its clarity. Here, those who have so far been put off exploring the work of one of the greatest living theologians will find an admirable introduction, and those who have struggled with his larger volumes will find an account which goes straight to the heart of the matter. Beginning from our modern world - for one of his new slogans is - 'Outside the world there is no salvation' - Professor Schillebeeckx looks at the place of God in contemporary culture; he then moves back to look at the life of Jesus and the way in which it has been responded to by the church. A final chapter, the longest, looks first at ethics, then at the tension between mysticism and politics, commitment to both of which is vital for Christians today, and shows how these three dimensions together must provide the framework for their life. This book focuses on the Caribbean church in its attempt to unravel the significance of the Christ-Event in the Caribbean context. The Challenges for the Catholic Christian in the New Millennium (Part I) articulates the major concerns of the Caribbean church under three main themes, namely, relevance, authenticity, and evangelization. These are presented as the evangelical posture needed for the contemporary period. Christ and Ethnicity in the Caribbean (Part II) attempts, through the use of the notion of the incarnation, to unravel the concept of Christ as Saviour in the Caribbean context. It attempts to show that genuine Caribbean theology is a reflection on the Christ-Event in the lives of its people. It is geared toward helping Caribbean Christians develop a greater sense of self-worth. It purports that Christology must be related to the identity of a people if it is to engender effective pastoral action. Toward a Caribbean Christian Civilization (Part III) gives a comprehensive view of the Caribbean reality in which Christianity is lived. It takes into account the influence of the history of the region, the effects of colonialism, the evolution of its culture(s), its ethnic composition and the dispositions that surrounded it, the challenge of traditional religious elements, and the moral question in its varied dimensions. Finally, it presents some suggestions on what a Caribbean Christian civilization should look like if it is to carry out the mandate of Christ. A Theological Reflection on "Bamboo Bursting" in the Caribbean serves as a postscript. It unravels the meaning of this pre-Christmas pastime in some of the territories of the Caribbean. Short though it may be, the collection provides a fair understanding of the Caribbean churchs experience and its responsibility to be a leaven in the midst of God's people in its particular context.
