Excerpt from Chile Today and Tomorrow America, one of the most enchantingly lovely, the most frankly friendly, regions in all the world. It seems as though nature had deliberately tried to compensate here for the arid and the stormy end of the belt by showering beauty upon the intervening strip. There is none of that strange illusory quality, the sense of living in a mirage, that attends upon tropi cal regions. Central Chile is fresh, dewy-bright, with the familiar sweetness of the temperate zones of western Europe. Here are fine cattle, sheep and horses, pleasant orchards of pears and plums and apples; olive groves and grapevines; the long green lines of wheat fields, the spires of the poplars, the blackberry hedges edged with gorse and bracken and purple-headed thistles, are all familiar. The stock of the farms, every kind of crop except those invaluable American contribu tions to the world's list of foods, maize and potatoes were introduced from overseas, but they have long been absorbed into the economic life of Chile. If the visitor is lulled into forgetfulness of his real milieu by the Sight of neat wooden fences, by the bramble-bor dered and fem-edged lane, he is recalled by the sudden glimpse of a shining white cone suspended in the trans parent air, the snowy head of a far volcano. Or he may see in the thicket beside the road a trail of copihue with its bright rosy hell, or note that the farmer, ruddy cheeked and bright-eyed, riding a fine horse along a deep muddy road, wears a gay poncho and a pair of enormous silver spurs. Excerpt from A History of Chile Two periods of Chileanihistory have already been well presented to the outside world: the period of the revolution and that of the late war between Chile and the peruvian-bolivian alliance. Respecting the period between the years 1829 and 1879 there is no connected account in English. Since the war with Peru, Chile has attracted considerable outside attention, and with in the past two years there have been several graphic accounts of modern Chile. What is now needed is a volume that will condense the information, which in English is scattered through many books, and give a complete, short history and picture of Chile in a sin gle volume; that I undertake to furnish in this work. Excerpt from Sixteen Years in Chile and Peru ON the 8th of August, 1822, I embarked on board the brig Bruce, Captain Greig, bound from Liverpool to Valparaiso and Callao. The vessel lay opposite the powder magazines; she had eleven steerage passengers on board, principally young men, going to seek situations in mercantile houses in South America; besides a Mrs. Frederic, with her son and daughter, going to Valparaiso, where she expected to join her husband, an Italian settled in that city. Excerpt from The Independence of Chile The history of human progress cannot furnish a more interesting spectacle than to see arise, from the decay and degeneration of despotism and selfishness, the white flower of freedom; to see justice issue from corruption, equality from degradation, contentment and prosperity from oppression and neglect. Nowhere in the chronicle of nations is this contrast more strikingly represented than in the story of Chile, the roots of whose independence are to be sought in the conditions that Spain imposed upon the colony during the period of her supremacy. These formed a comprehensive code of enactments whose only purpose was to augment the ever-increasing torrent of revenue that poured its golden flood of opulence into the royal coffers of Spain. These statutes were not infrequently suggested by Spanish Colonial officers, eager for the reward of royal commendation, and were therefore often prompted by local and particular requirements which modified, without superseding, previous decrees. None indeed, or very few, was ever rescinded, but new were added to old until after two centuries, Colonial law was become a maze and an enigma. Excerpt from Progressive Chile In the following presentation of Progressive Chile, no effort has been made to elaborate, to give undue coloring to the picture, or to magnify its defects. It is a record of impressions gained from personal observations, of the life and customs of the people in one of the most enlightened, progressive and interesting countries in South America. To attempt to conceal from view, to obscure the unsightly spots and blemishes that mar the social structure and disfigure the body politic, or to unnecessarily expose the moral and social defects and infirmities of a people who possess so many admirable qualities, commendable characteristics and desirable accomplishments, would be unjust, unfair. The truth is not always pleasant reading, and it may seem unkind to withhold the cup that patriotic pride demands. But let those who know the real life of Chile pass judgment, and if from long association they have not become so accustomed and inured to national, social and political deficiencies as to regard them as established and correct principles, they will agree with one who regards the situation from an unprejudiced viewpoint.
