Excerpt from Charter, Constitution, by-Laws and List of Members of the Saint Nicholas Society of the City of New York: Organized February 28th, 1835; Incorporated April 17th, 1841 The last volume issued by the Society three years ago commemorated its 7sth Anniversary year and it was thought fitting to insert in that volume views of. New York contemporary with its foundation. In the present volume it seemed desirable to remind our members of the aims and purposes for which the Society-stands, by inserting in this volume several of the contemporary news paper accounts of the Society's origin, together with extracts from the diary Of Mr. Philip Hone written at that time. From these it can be seen that it is pre eminently a Knickerbocker Society with most of our original and early members representing families de scended from Holland stock. The perusal of these ex tracts Should incite a feeling of pride in having the family name always appear on our roll of members. Since the last volume was published, a Memorial Tab let to Washington Irving was unveiled under the auspices of our Society. A reproduction of the tablet forms the frontispiece of this volume, and other illustrations are inserted of the Washington Irving High School in the vestibule of which the tablet is set. Through the courtesy of The New York Historical Society, a reproduction of a daguerreotype of Washington Irving taken by Plumb between the years 1843 and 1849 and presented by him to the mother of our present president forms one of the illustrations, and an interesting find of a lost page of Doctor Francis' address on Irving is reproduced.
