Excerpt from Charter, by-Laws, Rules and Regulations of the North Carolina Life Assurance, Annuity and Trust Company, Raleigh, N. C: Act of Incorporation, Ratified August 13th, A. D., 1868 "Life Assurance," says the New York Evening Post, "is a business with which every citizen, who has the wisdom and prudence to realize any available surplus income from his earnings or his property, ought to be fully acquainted. The scheme is intended to embrace the interests of the whole community - it is, properly considered, the great co-operative financial force of the people, associated for mutual advantage and protection; mobilizing the surplus earnings of all degcees in the true spirit of fraternity and equality; democratising the potent force of capital in the service of the highest interest of society. Very fairly may it be said, that the civilization of a people can be estimated by the relative progress of Life Assurance amongst them." The practice is advocated on high grounds of duty Benevolence and Religion, for the benefit of helpless infancy, disconsolate widowhood and unprotected orphanage. Its advantages, as an economical investment of inconsiderable, annual sums, in extending the affectionate care of the husband and father, beyond their own lives, to the objects of their love and affection, arc loo universally conceded in this day of progressive enlightment, to require either argument or illustration.
