DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book presents up-to-date information on foxtail millet genomics, with a particular focus on its agronomic importance, genome architecture, marker development, evolutionary and diversity studies, comparative genomics and stress biology. The topics discussed have the potential to open up a new era of crop improvement in foxtail millet and other related grass species. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is the oldest domesticated crop in the world (domesticated >8700 years ago) and it has been extensively grown in the semi-arid regions of Asia, Europe and the Americas as a food and fodder crop ever since. Further, as a C4 crop with close genetic relatedness to several biofuel grasses, foxtail millet has been promoted as a model plant. In view of its importance, the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute and Beijing Genomics Institute have independently sequenced the genome of foxtail millet. The availability of the draft genome sequence has advanced the genomics and genetics of this important crop, resulting in the development of large-scale genome-wide molecular markers and demonstration of their utility in genomics-assisted breeding, as well as the identification of the molecular and biological roles of several stress-responsive gene families in connection with abiotic stress tolerance. In addition, several open access databases have been developed to make these resources for crop improvement through structural and functional genomics widely available.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book highlights modern methods and strategies to improve cereal crops in the era of climate change, presenting the latest advances in plant molecular mapping and genome sequencing. Spectacular achievements in the fields of molecular breeding, transgenics and genomics in the last three decades have facilitated revolutionary changes in cereal- crop-improvement strategies and techniques. Since the genome sequencing of rice in 2002, the genomes of over eight cereal crops have been sequenced and more are to follow. This has made it possible to decipher the exact nucleotide sequence and chromosomal positions of agroeconomic genes. Most importantly, comparative genomics and genotyping-by-sequencing have opened up new vistas for exploring available biodiversity, particularly of wild crop relatives, for identifying useful donor genes.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book is the first comprehensive compilation of deliberations on domestication, genetic and genomic resources, breeding, genetic diversity, molecular maps & mapping of important biotic stress as well as nutritional quality traits, genome sequencing, comparative genomics, functional genomics and genetic transformation. The economic, nutritional and health benefits especially antioxidants mediated antiaging effects of finger millet are also discussed. It also presents the input use efficiency, wide adaptation, post-harvest processing and value addition of the crop. Altogether, the book contains about 300 pages over 16 chapters authored by globally reputed experts on the relevant field in this crop. This book is useful to the students, teachers and scientists in the academia and relevant private companies interested in genetics, pathology, molecular genetics and breeding, genetic engineering, structural and functional genomics and nutritional quality aspects of the crop. This book is also useful to seed and pharmaceutical industries.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKPearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) is commonly known as pearl, cat tail, spiked or bulrush millet in English is world's sixth important and widely grown potential food cereal crop in agriculture in India and Africa. The pearl millet is an annual tillering diploid (2n=14), belongs to Division: magnoliophyta, Class: liliopsida, Order: poales, Family: Poacae, Sub family Paniceidae, Genus: pennisetum, Species: P. glaucum and is believed to be originated in Africa, where the greatest diversity of morphological types exists. The center of diversity for the crop is in the Sahel zone of West Africa. In pearl millet a large number of crosses evaluated in hybrids each year. The characterization and identification of cultivars/hybrids is an urgent requirement. However, all types of marker are not suitable or feasible for the characterization and identification of hybrids. Morphological markers are less useful mainly due to lack of availability of an adequate number of ideal morphological markers in several hybrids.Molecular and biochemical markers are important tool for breeding selection, genotype identification and studying the organization and evolution of plant genomes.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKMethods in Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology emphasizes a variety of well-tested methods in plant molecular biology and biotechnology. For each detailed and tested protocol presented, a brief overview of the methodology is provided. This overview considers why the protocol is used, what other comparable methods are available, and what limitations can be expected with the protocol. Other chapters in the book present overviews regarding how to approach particular problems and introduce unique methods - such as how to use computer methodology to study isolated genes. The book will be a practical reference for plant physiologists, plant molecular biologists, phytopathologists, and microbiologists.
