Champions of Flight celebrates the work of Clayton Joseph Knight (1891–1969) and William John Heaslip (1898–1970), the two preeminent American aviation artists of their time, as they chronicled the golden age of aviation—from Charles Lindbergh's epochal transatlantic flight through the most devastating war in world history (1927–1945). Knight and Heaslip were experienced military men and formally trained artists who, combining an authenticity of experience and an artistic mastery of illustration, produced powerful artwork that influenced a generation of Americans, creating air-minded adults and youngsters, many of whom flocked to US military service after Pearl Harbor. Aviation became deeply embedded into America’s culture during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. Americans became fascinated by aviation celebrities, watched air spectacles, aviation movies and newsreels, and devoured books, aviation industry ads, magazine articles, and Sunday comics featuring pilot heroes. Artists Knight and Heaslip—both of whom were adept as draftsmen, painters and printmakers—fueled the imagination of these Americans through prolific illustrations and artwork that appeared in many diverse publications of the time. Over a period of almost twenty years, Clayton Knight and William Heaslip championed their love of flight through their art, and they did so with enthusiasm, integrity, and generosity. In 1940, a group of sportsmen of the first rank, members of the Southern Amateur Field Trial Club of Albany, Georgia, undertook to design a field trial format that would provide a more comprehensive and rigorous test of the qualities of high class bird dogs. Dubbed the Òdream trialÓ by William F. Brown at its inaugural offering, the trial, the Quail Championship, was contested in 1941, and 1942 in the quail-rich plantation country in the Albany, Georgia area. Interrupted by World War II, the trial remained as only a bright and shining memory until 1964 when it was resurrected as the Quail Championship Invitational in 1964 at Paducah, Kentucky. Limited to twelve invited contestants, the best of the previous yearÕs major circuit competition, the trial seeks to identify a bird dog with strength, courage, intelligence, and character at the highest level, the Òbest of the best.Ó True to its origin, the trial provides the most comprehensive and equitable test of the major circuit dogs of the field trial sport.

The Newark Eagles won only one Negro National League pennant during the franchise's 15-year tenure in the Garden State, but the 1946 squad that ran away with the NNL and then triumphed over the Kansas City Monarchs in a seven-game World Series was a team for the ages. World War II had ended, and numerous players who had served in the military returned to resume their playing careers with the Eagles. The returning veterans composed a veritable "Who's Who in the Negro Leagues" and included Leon Day, Larry Doby, Monte Irvin, and Max Manning, as well as numerous role players. Four of the Eagles' stars-Day, Doby, Irvin, and player/manager Raleigh "Biz" Mackey, as well as co-owner Effa Manley-have been enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
