For instance, the total value of goods made in the city of Boston for the Census year was and the total value Of goods sold in the wholesale and retail houses of Boston amounted to an aggregate for Manufactures and Trade of These figures are interesting in themselves, but it must he confessed that the presentation Of them in tabular detail gives no clue to the proportion of goods manufactured in Boston Which found its way to consumers in Massachusetts and the pro portion which was sold beyond her borders; nor is any light shed by these figures upon the extent to which goods sold, either at retail or wholesale here, were the product Of Massachusetts mills and factories, and to how great an extent it was necessary for Massachusetts merchants to import goods made in other States in order to satisfy the demands of the local consumer.
