DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe field of the neurosciences is one of the most rapidly growing in present biological research. Its molecular aspects are dealt with by the discipline of neurobiochemistry. As the theme of the Mosbacher Colloquium, we chose this term rather than the term "neurochemistry", in order to stress the dynamic biochemical aspects of present molecu lar neurobiology and to avoid the flavor of being purely descriptive and "static", which is frequently associated with the term neurochem istry. This appears the more warranted, since the natural products and analytical chemistry phase of discovering the basic chemical com ponents of the nervous system has passed its culmination. The period of assessment has laid the foundation for studying the dynamic inter play of the various chemical components in the actual biological opera tion of nervous tissue. Thus, neurobiochemis~ry is that part of the neurosciences which is dominated by the ways of thinking and the metho dology of biochemistry. For this Colloquium only topics were selected that deal with the biochemistry of neurons. Thus, we excluded from the agenda other neu ral cells such as glial cells (astrocytes, ependymal cells, oligoden drocytes), meningeal cells, and capillary endothelial cells. This restriction was applied for two reasons: (1) The time available for the meeting did not allow an extensive display of the whole spectrum of neurobiochemical research. (2) The biochemistry of neurons is far more advanced than that of any other cell type of the nervous system •.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe world is faced with an epidemic of metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. This is due to changes in dietary habits and the decrease in physical activity. Exercise is usually part of the prescription, the first line of defense, to prevent or treat metabolic disorders. However, we are still learning how and why exercise provides metabolic benefits in human health. This open access volume focuses on the cellular and molecular pathways that link exercise, muscle biology, hormones and metabolism. This will include novel “myokines” that might act as new therapeutic agents in the future.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDevelopment of the Nervous System, Second Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated since the publication of the First Edition. It presents a broad outline of neural development principles as exemplified by key experiments and observations from past and recent times. The text is organized along a development pathway from the induction of the neural primordium to the emergence of behavior. It covers all the major topics including the patterning and growth of the nervous system, neuronal determination, axonal navigation and targeting, synapse formation and plasticity, and neuronal survival and death. This new text reflects the complete modernization of the field achieved through the use of model organisms and the intensive application of molecular and genetic approaches. The original, artist-rendered drawings from the First Edition have all been redone and colorized to so that the entire text is in full color. This new edition is an excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate level students in courses such as Neuroscience, Medicine, Psychology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Developmental Biology. - Updates information including all the new developments made in the field since the first edition - Now in full color throughout, with the original, artist-rendered drawings from the first edition completely redone, revised, colorized, and updated
